Hey Pt.5....A morning in the capital

Post by Iron_Maiden »

A quick little excerpt I wrote today while Aldans is getting under way to help the Xia. A little glimpse into the world of 2049 at 7 A.M in Boston. Enjoy, feedback wanted.

Joanne breathed in the air with a faint appearance of joy upon her face as she passed the flower shop. Same thing, different day. The tall skyscrapers of Boston seemed to loom down upon her without care, to busy dealing with the plethora of information that came though each steel and glass each and every day. 7 A.M, and the city was coming alive, 800 million souls each to their daily task, be it productive or not. But for the past month, it had been different. There was a sense of both anxiety and patriotism in the air. Everywhere she turned; there was talk of the war and what the latest news from the front was. It was incomprehensible to her at such an age. Her mother tugged her along on towards the market. She loved going to the market with her mother, the smell of fresh produce was literally a breath of fresh air amongst the hazy sky of inner Boston. Even in a world without mass oil, the other pollutants that were a plague on humanity continued to rear their ugly head’s above those in the most congested areas of the city. They turned the corner, and as to be expected, was Charlie Fitzpatrick. Every time they went to the market, they expected to find him there. Then, for times from 15 minutes to a brief 10 seconds, they would discuss what was on their minds. Ever since this war had begun, their sessions would get longer and longer and more detailed. She barely understood, and could care less about it. She was content with her confined life in Jamaica Plain, amidst the chaos that seemed to have plagued it well since her birth nine years ago. Her mom stopped and began her conversation with Charlie. As usual, Joanne would sit on the nearby stairs and wait until they were finished.

“Did you hear?”

“Hear what?”

“Well, first, I heard on EFN that the EF high council is considering putting the Legionary Act in place.”

“Really? It’s still so early to consider using the Legionary Act. I don’t think we’ve lost 1000 soldiers. Not that any have to die of course.”

“That brings me to the second thing; they are saying that a cruiser called the Xia has crashed on Ectoclopsys.”

“No!”

“It’s true; there is some video of it on EFN, not good quality, but still.”

“Please, I wouldn’t trust EFN video if my life depended on it, not after the Bangkok incident. I swear, after the scandal with General Wolfe, they went downhill fast.”

“I doubt they would lie about this. Besides, XOF is more unreliable, especially after their coverage on the founding of New Baghdad.”

“Well you just admitted that EFN is unreliable by saying that XOF was more unreliable, thus meaning that EFN indeed has its own sense of unreliability.”

“I hate when you do that. Besides, even if it was an unreliable network, which it isn’t, I doubt they would make this up.”

“I’ll believe it when I see it.”

Charlie moved his hands towards his side and looked for his tablet, failing to find it in the many pockets of his shorts, looking up at Joanne’s mother with a look of slight embarrassment upon his face.

“Well, I guess you’ll just have to watch the news when you get home.”

“I guess I will. Now what was that you were saying about the Legionary Act?”

“Oh yeah. Well, they are saying due to a possible need for a large amount of troops now that the ESEDF is encountering a much larger military presence. They say that they are requesting six divisions for both the fleet’s in combat and another six in reserve in case of a large scale combat operation that would span the known system.”

Joanne looked at the sky and thought. She had heard of the legionaries of the Romans, an ancient people who conquered a lot of places. She was glad she was still out of school, at least for now. She was waiting to go back though, she would have Mrs. Ing and would be able to see some of her other friends that weren’t around her neighborhood.

“They also said they are considering the Security Council War Act.”

“Really? Which ones are on the council this year?”

“Same as last year, U.S, U.K, France, Germany, Russia, China, and India. Council says if the war really gets out of control they may use the act to bolster numbers by the draft.”

“I hope Jack doesn’t get it, he’s getting old you know.”

“I wouldn’t worry about that, the act probably won’t need to be used, and Jack wouldn’t make the cut anyways due to his asthma.”

“Well that’s good to hear. Oh, look at the time, I really have to head to the market, Jack is working late today and I want to make him a special dinner.”

“Okay, well I’ll see you later then.”

“Okay, bye. Joanne, come along.”

Joanne got up from the stairs and went back over to her mother and took her hand as they continued their walk towards the market. On the way she noticed a long line of men outside a building. It wasn’t any form of artistic or food related institution.

“Mom, what is that?”

“That’s the ESEDF recruitment office dear.”

Joanna continued to hold her mother’s hand and move forward, all the while looking back at the long line of men outside a small building looks ranging from pride to terror to confusion upon their faces. Whatever these acts that the council had, she had a doubt in the back of her mind they would be needed.

Undeniably unreliably uncertain.
