Hollywood accounting -

Post by GSH »

The most creative types in Hollywood aren't the scriptwriters or Special EFX creators. It's the accounting department. According to this, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi has never made a profit.

Not really, If you go round doing things like making a profit, all sorts of parasites turn up to take it away from you, The tax man (The people, your customers) shareholders (the people who enabled you to do it), the bloody actors (who actually did it), I mean what's the point if you can't just run off with all the money!
This is really quite normal in many Business's today, why do you think the economy's of the free world are all going bankrupt, while still having a huge number of very wealthy people living in them.
Death by loophole.

Yes, very similar to winning the lottery.

But with the lottery. . . add every relative, former girlfriend, and childhood best friend(s).

Ha. Ok admittedly, it was the weakest film of the original trilogy, but there is no way it didn't make a profit. How many times was it theatrically released? Or to various video formats?

Have you read the article?
They explain there that they have company A that hires Company B to do things but let company B charge such a high fee that company A never makes a profit. If company A made the movie they didnt make a profit, however company B got rich. So when company A says they didnt make any profit, it is actually the truth.

I am reminded of the MPAA taking those fake torrents listed on torrent sites that are just ads (literally, any combo of buzz words and search terms, I can make it say "Battlezone Five: Return of the Jedi Complete Album Complete [FastDL]". They take those fake numbers and then multiply it by a value that doesn't even reflect the cost of whatever movie they are checking on, and then they claim them as losses.

There are many circumstances of the MPAA screwing the actors, even keeping money meant for the actors that they ill got through false copyright violation 'pay up or else' DMCA schemes.

I don't think they are bad at math, I think they are very good at it, i think they lie and cheat and scam us all, actors and customers.

There's a real budget deficit in the US. I say we tax Hollywood productions 50% off the top (gross take). Or audit Hollywood the way Enron got some attention. They could use a little scrutiny.
