yes, the war vets have definitely earned it. the problem is that people, for the most part, are sheep and blithely follow wherever they are led. it's not like they don't have a mind of their own, but rather that they choose not to use it and feel more comfortable accepting the status quo.

In the end its about doing what needs to be done, "private" health care is basically a scam that seeks to generate allot of money by offering allot of unnecessary treatment to the healthiest part of the population only. Sick people don't earn lots of money, ill health and poverty are directly linked. You worry about subsidising others, but ill bet your actually paying a hell of allot more to keep your nation sick than I do to make mine well. :)

the problem in our country is that the gubmint got involved in it and forced doctors and hospitals to do work for less than market value (Medicare & Medicaid), which forced them to perform lots of unnecessary bookkeeping for the gubmint, which increased costs unnecessarily.

so... in order to recoup those extra costs, the doctors and hospitals started charging more for care and the insurance companies started reducing what they would charge for medical care, therefore, when we get a medical bill from the insurance companies, you'll see the high charges from the hospital/doctor in one column, another column labeled "discount" that subtracts a large portion of charges.

before the government ("progressives") got involved, you just paid what you could afford or the doctors just wrote it off and everyone was fine.

so, it isn't because doctors are greedy, but, because the government got involved and interfered with the market.

IOW, when politicians get involved in business, things rapidly go to hell.

edit: here's a good link on it:

I learned that dreaming about towns covered in darkness and under attack by monsters led by a black dragon king is a memorable experience.

I agree with the "politicians mess things up" sentiment, but we have the situation we do because polititians got involved.

But that was in much simpler times, post war it was just one more thing that had to be done, "business" didn't really come into it as the existing system (or lack of) simply couldn't do the job. I guess we were lucky not to be so hampered by problems like insurance company's and a population of very wealthy people represented by divisive self seeking career politicians putting their own interests above those of the Nation. Yawl need a few months of blitzkrieg to get your heads sorted out straight.

Apples, from the tree, taste so much better when their owner is rotting in the house and the stench is floating out onto their backyard.
