NASA tries a dropship

See this. If it works, great. Does have a ton of pieces that all need to work reliably, though. It'll all go into action August 5 about 10:30PM PDT. Official video here.

Yes, the "7 minutes of Hell" landing attempt.

I have a feeling it'll work out. That's a rather payload they're trying to land over there.

I give it an 80% chance of landing without damage.

This IS a test run. This system is a first time event with all working together.

You have to get an earth ton on the ground from just under mach 2, down to ~2mph . . . in a soft vacuum. A very big feat.

I'm currently watching the event coverage on Xbox live (which is surprisingly good). It's quite astounding to say the least.

i'm thinking that a modified hexacopter would be perfect for there. 8-)
