Local FPV is here now in crude form. External linking to the flight control over a 4G network is actively being worked on by many RC hobbyists.

My interest, and what I suggest at the beginning of this thread, is much more attuned to high-quality video transmission and subjective lengthy flight (>60 min).

I think what MrTwosheds should be more concerned about is the military's MAV programs that will certainly trickle down to local law enforcement in the coming years. Complete, or near complete covert surveillance. Which is indeed much more insidious than a large FPV-UAV the size of a large bird.

There will always be naysayers for every new technology. New technologies always offer more redeeming value than the negatives that also come along..

The above remote UAV described technology will certainly be misused. But the vast majority will use it to enhance the quality of their life. Those that can't afford to visit the vacation spots they've always wanted to visit. Those that want to visually check on loved ones in desolate vacation spots. Emergency responders that can't safely check areas because of safety, etc.

If we allowed naysayers to cherry pick the negatives to justify why technology shouldn't be done, we would still be using mules and plows, wax candles for evening lighting, and leeches to cure ailments.

Home made UAV= Cell phone with camera straped onto a remote controlled model airplane or helicopter tied together to a mobile laptop via wireless connection; say good bye to privacy people. Uncle Lamb is watching.

[moved this from the thread, LOL 12/21/2012? Dream ON since it's more appropriate in this prediction thread]

Watched inventor and futurist Ray Kuzweil's just released new film "Transcendent Man" last night. At first glance he may seem a bit over the top, but he has 50 years of correctly predicting future technology and inventing several technologies we use everyday. At 17 in 1963 wrote pattern-recognition code to read classical music. MIT grad, held many flat-bed scanner patents, instrument synthesizers patents, AI code, OCR, braille-to-voice readers, etc.

He's the guy who coined 'The Singularity' when referring to technology, and wrote the book 'The Singularity Is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology'.

He is making some really, REALLY freaky predictions for the next 30 years.

Here we have onboard algorithms responding to extreme initial conditions (attempting to take off from non-flat orientation, such as an awkward landing in the environment) and improvisational response to unknown variables in the field. Lastly, the ability to fly in extremly tight flight path corridors as in heavy traffic upon returning to a clustered parking area.

Basically, this removes any critical input from the human operator if signal loss or latency becomes a factor or the ability of the human operator's skillset is not up to the task.

Cracked is finally on board. Although it's MUCH cheaper than 20k. ;)

At the moment, FPV UAVs are still limited to about a 1,200 meter radius for the average joe. Once the combining of autonomous override and a 4g network are combined, you will see an explosion of uses enter the marketplace.

And yes, we can check off one of the prerequisites for high distance UAV on a budget. Return-to-home from loss of signal has arrived for a few hundred bucks.

8-)

if Coors was smart, they'd jump all over that and have about 50 of them fly a bunch of them carrying 12-packs into the superbowl during half time.

Another example of the contribution UAVs will provide in the next few years.
