Pet Peeves: Elevation != Altitude, "Pree-sentation"

ohhhhh, the times i have unfortunately heard someone use 'altitude' when they should use 'elevation'....
"Altitude with Attitude!"
Dummy....
Altitude pertains to height above sea level *when in an aircraft/above the terrain*.
Elevation pertains to height above sea level *when on the ground*
when you arrive at the border of a town/city, you don't see something like, "Atlanta, Altitude 738 feet", but, rather, "Atlanta, Elevation 738 feet"
grrrrrrrrr....

The term that gets me is "fold", as in, "The spacecraft's speed has increased 5 fold."
Fold means, or should mean, to double the last quantity as in folding a cloth.
For example, if the spacecraft was traveling at 2,500 miles per hour and it speed increased 5 fold, it would not be 12,500mph, but rather 80,000mph.

What gets me is people with the idea that their lexicon is the only lexicon.

Another is when people continuously correct others when someone means alien ship and says ufo.
However, now after all these years of the mystery, I tend to accept the parlance of ufo meaning "alien craft".

Fold means, or should mean, to double the last quantity as in folding a cloth.
However the suffix "fold" means "having the stated number of parts, or multiplied by the stated number" (
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/-fold,
http://dictionary.cambridge.org/diction ... ish/fold_5). Hence, fivefold means five times the previous value.

I understand the etymology and common use, that's why I said 'should mean'.

It's a mathematical symbol, or an approximation of one.

As in:
3! = 3 x 2 x 1
21! = 21 x 20 x 19 x 18 x 17 x 16 x 15 x 14 x 13 x 12 x 11 x 10 x 9 x 8 x 7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1
