Goodbye to all things Battlezone
I have been playing , editting maps, tinkering in mods, and studying the inner working of this genre for years.
I have also been studying programming primarily in Python along with some C++.
In the past year, I have been debating the idea of whether or not to develop a new form of Battlezone or not.
The history of all things Battlezone shows this genre attracts both creative and destructive people.
This in turn forces those who would maintain the creative aspect of this genre to police the destructive people who do not choose to follow any rules of morality, fair play, and many other issues most on the creative side consider very important.
The result is a host of ban lists and censorship from game servers, forums, groups dividing, and in one case, the issues spilled over into real life, causing one of our own to suffer a great deal of grief. Several websites dedicated to these games have risen and fallen because of conflict over these issues.
Clans form with violent names, players encouraged by the violent nature of the genre, hack the game to further mistreat people and the list of bad complaints is endless.
The genre has only attracted and encouraged the worst of our dark sides to come to the surface and no policing action by the creative and good side will ever over come the dark side as long as the genre is allowed to continue.
The downfall of BZuniverse.com and way it fell is inexcusable. We are all to blame this. The stronger the policing actions on BZU forums the stronger the dark side of us came back. This was a no win situation regardless of how anyone looks at it.
When a game( remember what a game is supposed to be? entertainment? fellowship?) becomes more than just a game, by spilling over into real life, it is time to question the game.
After a very long and thoughtful debate, I have decided never to support this genre in any form ever again. I will never visit any forum with this genre ever again.
My archives and anything Battlezone will be deleted from my website as well as any other game with this genre. My personal archives at home will be destroyed.
I wish you all well in what ever you do. Goodbye

It's never good when a player leaves, but posts like this compound the problem.

If you would just join my G66 mpi's here and there you wouldn't have to worry about rules of fair play or morality etc, just good old fashioned fight the enemy. TNT, Pedro, Matt, Ocube, Red Devil, Commando, and many others join on occasion and we talk, make jokes and just have super fun almost every day. We quiet down when we're really fighting some hard stuff but it's all good clean fun. Hate to see you leave, but don't act like there aren't games up that don't have fun people in them.

Ds (not listening now I suppose) its really got nothing to do with the game, its just people, that's what their like...
If it wasn't this game it would be another, if not a game then a religion or a war, they would take sides and fight, creating both irrational and fictional reasons for doing so as they go along. Leaving this game will not alter human nature one bit. Conflict of one sort or another is the natural human state.

I guess you should sell your computer also because you'll find cheaters and assholes in every game that lets the user run a server or you can do like I've done for the past 7 years, spread the word about those that cheat and cause trouble. I also use peer block. My two gaming teams are small but you'll find there are good people in every game just weed out the bad.
Cheaters and assholes play alone.

Well, deadscion, I have to say one thing: Anywhere you go, trolls will be there. It's not the genre. It's not the game. So don't abandon the game only because of trolls. Cause any forum you join, any game you play, and anything on the internet HAS trolls...

Erm... you must not know of the constant stream of X-box hackers then...PCG-Oldfart wrote:I guess you should sell your computer also because you'll find cheaters and assholes in every game that lets the user run a server or you can do like
Personally, what I think BZ really needs is a place that allows peeps like Scion here to go an not have to experience the hard to avoid infighting. I'll quote everyone else above that it's not the genre that's broke.
Mixing FPS/RPG doesn't require bashing people for mods, vandalism, and IRL harassment, it's just right now there isn't enough good players who isn't used to infighting to dilute those who are more about forum wars than about having fun.

Re: Goodbye to all things Battlezone
console games are why PC games suck now and I didn't know that BZ2 was ever a console game. I'm not trying to bash anyone it was just my way of saying you have cheats in every game and you have to build a strong community of honest players and constantly force the cheaters and ah's out.

Just think of the greifing on OvermindDL1's whitelisted Minecraft server. The trolls are EVERYWHERE. In your whitelists, on your computer, in your private games.
I have at least one person I have greatly interested in this game, but that is the game, not the community.
The community here is a microcosm of many much larger communities. That means that as there are so fewer count of people you can so easily find the bad apples.

Re: Goodbye to all things Battlezone
Wow, talk about the pot calling the kettle black...
deadscion, for the record you have been everything you now say you can't stand about the Battlezone community for years.
Lately you may have soften your tone but back in the BZU days no one was a bigger jerk (most of the time) when he felt he wasn't getting his say (or way) about the direction BZ2 was going or how the host of BZU was handling his site.
You now blame the game itself when your past actions and many of the 1.2 hanger-on's seem to only stay on these forums to stir crap up. They feel that their vision of the game and how it was once played is the only way everyone else should be playing and that the rest of us here that continue to move the game forward are not real fans or players of the game.
I wish you nothing but the best deadscion. You have helped make the game itself better over the years and I have enjoyed your maps/mods but if you go back and read some of what you have said and the tone in which you have said them, I'd think you should have first pointed out that those actions and those that joined in the tearing down and demonizing of anyone that didn't agree with you are what helped get us all to this place the community is now at.
Don't blame the game since it is just a piece of software about tanks. It's those that feel their way of playing it is the only way. And winning is the only thing the rest of us should love about the game. Seems they just don't understand the rest of us that continue to play, test and mod for such a small community.
Seems quitting the game is easier than just filtering out the trouble makers as some have done publicly lately but then whose left? I was there in the glory days of BZ2 when servers were full of games but I miss the players of back then and the fun we had not the "features" and the bugs that we dealt with.
It was about community and that seems to be lost on the loudest who just seem to be anger about anything and everything.
