It was more than four million users at peak times. That should be a fair indicator there, rice. If it weren't steam, it would only be some other service like GFWL, which is utterly awful. (Also, Steam is far cheaper than retail).

Sites like http://www.gog.com/ let you legally buy older games, completely withOUT DRM, etc. Gog.com doesn't require a client running, just buy, download, backup (not 100% sure if gog allows free unlimited re-downloads), install and play. Gog.com also has some free titles like Ultima IV. If you're after legal PC gaming, that's probably the most unintrusive setup. Steam has newer titles, indie titles, and better sales at times.
