Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I'll be following it. I loved 'Independence War' because of the simulated physics. If this is even close to IW, I will love it.

Apparently if you use this referral link (mine) and purchase you have a chance to win a joystick (and I a gamepad):

Figured I would throw that out there. It has like 2 days left so it's nearly moot. I was asking around on IM who wanted to refer me but it's a weird time ATM and everyone is asleep.

The more I see of this game the more it appears to be the most ambitious MMO/single player game ever created. It looks awesome.

It uses a heavily modified version of Cry-engine 3. Chris Roberts, the guy who created Wing Commander back in the early 90's, is heading the development. He initially asked, through kickstarter crowd funding, for 2 million to start. . . the game has now raised 67 million! It has consistently raised, on average, around 400k per week.

It will only be for the PC. No console porting to compromise the graphics. The hardware specs for the game will require a fairly high-end PC at a minimum. The on-screen polys can be as high as 300K. The capital carriers will have upwards of 7 million polys.

As the monetary stretch goals rise, the more elements are added. The ship interiors will have around 80% functionality. The HUDs will be 90-100% functional. Full gimbaled thrusters and gimbal assisted cannons. All of which are fully animated. Full crysis level FPS on planets and space stations. You'll be able to leave your ship and FPS board other ships. Collision detection with destroyed ship debris, other ships, rocks, etc. will be included. No obvious loading screens. It will have Oculus Rift support.

Needless to say, you'll need a bit more hardware than it takes to run BZ2 to play the game.

It will have no rolling fee, no clear-cut pay to win scheme, but will be supported entirely from purchasing ships, ship insurance and hanger space. However, you can buy chits for extra currency and earn credits in the game, just as in games like EVE online.

On the subject of milestones . . . Star Citizen will be released in six sections, two main sections the dog fighting component, 'Arena Commander 1.0' of which is the single player component of 'Squadron 42' was released a couple days ago, which also just had a multiplayer test which went great, with a few bugs. The other 5 sections are slated to be released over the coming months to be completed by late next summer.

Speaking of bugs and development, one of the awesome things about SC is the transparency and how the supporters are allowed to vote on aspects of the sim and how Chris Roberts will admit to bugs and the promise to address them. A contest was recently held for the best fan designed ship. All of which is shared in weekly video updates and quarterly video stream conferences, some of which last hours.

It looks absolutely amazing and could very well be the game of the decade or bigger.

Ambitious is a fine goal. Shipping a better one.

Maybe I'm just jaded as I get older, but I much prefer to see honest reviews by customers and form my buying decisions based on that. There's been too much hype that never delivered (aka Peter Molyneux, among others)

I agree, so I'm holding back. And it's a real conundrum. The longer I hold back, the more rare the "deals" and opportunities. Such as in lifetime insurance on the basic chassis of a particular ship, stretch goal "sales" on ships, limited time offers, one time only designs, etc.

Plus the game does look staged to be successful.

What's peaking my interest is two things. The mind-numbing complexity of balance of the ships, weapons, speed, shielding, jump distance, cargo capacity, etc., and the fact RSI has said for many months, the bigger ships will be multi-crewed, as in multiple players aboard one ship. When a player is not 'active', he will be asleep in a bunk or in a berthing area so particular mission(s) will not considered if there's only, say, one or two people "awake".

On the other hand, as you say, the game could turn out to be nothing like the hype and/or a buggy monstrosity.

My current mindset is, since it needs top-tier hardware, something I'm lacking at the moment, I will wait a few more months to see how it continues to shake out and allow the PC hardware to run it to come down.

I feel exactly the same way. Reminds me of Duke Nukem many years ago, being one of my 1st awesome online multiplayer experiences I was highly excited by all the hype surrounding Duke Nukem Forever, to much MUCH later finding out that the only thing 3D Realms delivered on was that it took 'Forever' to release and was a gross disappointment.

I was a huge fan of the Wing Commander series, seeing the original founder (Chris Roberts) is involved in Star Citizen I was naturally excited, and have been following somewhat, but I'm not getting my hopes up until it is finally released.

Elite Dangerous is a space sim that was recently released with high anticipation w/ gorgeous graphics, but reading through actual player reviews, many of which were involved with beta testing, prove it was released far too incomplete. This will hopefully be addressed in future updates, but I am withholding my $60 until it is and proven to be by independent reviewers.

Planetside 2 - free to play - I was involved in Beta and it was officially released a bit too early, but now it is finally very stable. Free to play so I didn't mind as much ($ is not needed to gain good rank and abilities in PS2, you earn cert points which can be used to buy weapons or abilities and gain 'nanites' used to build tanks, aircraft, mines etc etc.). Random lag, CTDs, memory leaks and other serious bugs drove many away in the beginning. Now that it is very stable, many players have returned and pay into an EXCELLENT game as do I. It's still using DirectX9 but you wouldn't notice this on full ultra settings, is just mind blowing (especially in 3D). The only game that can be played to simulate the real chaos of battles with dozens, hundreds or even thousands fighting in the same battle in a section of one of 4 HUGE continents (approx 10Km x 10Km in size -- like 50 BZ2 maps patch worked together) littered with many well designed bases, outposts, amp stations, objectives natural and man made barriers. There is nothing like setting up a machine gun nest near the peak of a mountain, to pear over the top and see several hundred army 'ants', tanks and incoming aircraft charging your position, bullets and shells whizzing by, to look back and see hundreds of your teammates setting up an awesome defense, holding back the horde with turrets, rocket launchers, tanks, maxes and gun towers blaring. Flaming hulks of destroyed enemy craft visible, billowing smoke, incoming enemies as far as the eye can see. OR choose a smaller battle as indicated on your map. Large battles with 100+ players tend to tax weaker systems (I average 50FPS with Ultra settings in 3d (80-FPS with no 3d). PS2 is a definite must have game, especially if you love BZ2 and have dreamed for a BZ3. The only element I find it's missing is the ability to build/deconstruct bases, but has strategy, ships, teamwork and resource management elements and all the tactical FPS shooter elements we've grown to expect. Check it out, you will not be sorry and the only game to deliver this kind of a MASSIVE experience. To start, I suggest joining an outfit and go through training. There is much to learn and can be highly complex depending on your play style. Otherwise, if you just jump in, expect your K/D ratio to be very low unless you stick to small skirmishes. :D

To me that reads as 'fail' or 'ready in about 10 years'. Both are the same for me .. not interested.
MP games that require top-tier HW just give me the feeling they are doomed to fail, or die out soon enough to call it a fail.

I'm 99% confident it's not a scam, or a "it'll be done when it's done" mess since Arena Commander 1.0 is now released. Plus the dozens of videos such as the 'Around the Verse' (Q&A) and the '10 for the Chairman' (Q&A) to Chris Roberts, 'Meet the Devs' series.

It is by far the most transparent development of a AAA game I've ever seen. Plus Chris Roberts has his entire reputation bundled into it. Plus they've been keeping release promises within a month or so of their claims.

This sounds neat - may scope it out. I have some next gen setups I could put it on - one can build a computer that can plays NextGen Games for less than $500 if you put your mind and shopping skills to it - you know, WatchDogs, WolfenStein, AS:U. Just need to think of buying a new computer as.... paying rent? A few payments and you have a pretty sweet living situation.

But... whenever I load the website to my producing machine in Firefox (OSX) it crashes my entire system (Kernel Shutdown) - something that doesn't occur unless abusing the machine. I needed to hard reset. Lucky I wasn't doing anything important - my Firefox is up to date and I'm just iffy about loading it altogether at this point.

I replicated the issue twice.

I'm not pointing fingers at the website or this game, it's just interesting. I may... or may not... load the site on one of my PC's. heh

Yea, the RSI site loads fine for me both with chrome and firefox.

Although, it loads a running video on the home page, so that may be something to do with your issue.

I didn't realise until yesterday that Patrick Probst, one of Cloud Imperium's UK developers, is my second cousin. Small world.

Ur prolly right GBD. My Flash player is teh fail.
Liek, Firefox has been telling me about how insecure it's become for the last 2 yeeers, mengs, back when I arbitrarily decided to reformate my hardrive.
...this would explain a lot of the fires.

Somewhat off-topic: Google Chrome includes Flash player, and updates to Flash are bundled with the monthly Chrome update. Cross two updates off your list at once.

Plus, Chrome has a 64-bit version that should be a bit faster.
