Man I have Max 2010 and I'm telling you for a fact that you just go to the Edit UVW's box and hit tools>render UVW template, I've done it too man times to count.

Got any other UV mapping tips? Like any plugins that can actually unwrap an object in a manner that makes any sense.

For 3ds max relatively an advanced user gets more from it UVW mapping toolset, but for us average users TexTools will give a mya-like UV expierience, you can do all sorts of things, easily merge than "iron" out UV's good for doing continuous uv's instead of making obvious seems.

One day I'd love to see Jayden do a screen capture where he UV's and applies a basic texture to a model...

In fact, I'd kill for that information.
