commtower class stability?

I've been using the commtower class off a gun tower model to access bz1 style sat view. It seems to work ok initially when you press "9", the slot it overrides, but on and off I have noticed crashes that come a bit later into the mission when I use this. The last one just locked everything up, I had to do a hard system reset to reboot, and when I looked in the battlezone.txt there were the 2 lines logging the switch from satview to cockpit view followed by a long list of access violations.
Are other people encountering this, and should I wait to use this until the next patch after some more work? I really want this feature, but not at the expense of constant crashes.
An alternative, and I don't know if this would work in the bz2 engine, would be for GSH or Ultraken to code some kind of expensive powerup you could load into your tank from the Armory, a Comms Package, so to speak, that could alter your vehicle on the fly and let it inherit the view properties of the Command Vehicle, again, I don't know if that can be done, but it would avoid the slot override problem.
Also, anybody working on models for a BZ2 Comm Tower and a Sensor unit that uses the sensor class? A small building that acts as a sensor out to 500m or so is a useful early warning device on large maps. The little Mobile Transmitter model is not a bad model for this, but it has tracks, which makes it a bit odd for something you build with a constructor.
