bzscrap link.... to old bz univers broken?
I was happy to see someone had found old battlezone univers link and i actaully opened and surft thrue its last week so cool .....but yesterday and today i get this ,,,,,,
News: Due to abuse of bandwidth by bots and actual humans, a max connections and maximum bandwidth per second has been put into place. If you receive a 403, just refresh the page after a few seconds. Sorry for the inconvenience this may cause. I suspect this will be resolved by end of month once a good list of IP bans are made.
tell me this will be resolved at end of mouth.... or have some poeple actually managed to compleetly kill what was left of it ?!!

It seems to be that they are fishing to see which IP's are taking advantage of their resources and ban them. They will likely be back up by next month.

Re: bzscrap link.... to old bz univers broken?
A ton of bots have been connecting to bzuniverse.bzscrap.org, upward of 1000 connections every few minutes. As a temporary fix, I had put a bandwidth limit mod on the virtualhost. Somewhere around 20kb/s and 6 max connections I believe.
Actually that notice has been there for a bit over a month and I do have a nice list of IP's that seem to be the constant cause of the issue. It's just been on my todo list for sometime, and I have been putting other things in front of that task.
I'll get to it this week-weekend, or try my best. Although it should be pretty easy to pick out which IP's are abusing, there are just so many random IP's hitting it. A simple ban range isn't suggested.
As I said in that notice, I am sorry for the inconvenience, it was my only quick fix because it was causing apache service to be quite busy with that virtualhost.

Do you have any idea why they are targeting your site?squirrelof09 wrote:A ton of bots have been connecting to bzuniverse.bzscrap.org, upward of 1000 connections every few minutes. Re: bzscrap link.... to old bz univers broken?
I suspect that most of them are the bots that crawled the old bzuniverse.com domains, and have easily found out where the archives of bzunverse are retained now. Given that cmptrwzs servers have been hit so many times by attacks on his sites, TF2 servers, it makes me wonder if Wz's domains were manually jammed into botnets by people in the past, and now they've crawled to my servers.
After stating the above, I just realized I know a little too much :p. Nah, it's just a theory and seems reasonable to me. I run a couple of servers around US, chicago being the most popular, so I think about security pretty often. Personally, I liked cmptrwz but I can't say the same for other people that would do harm to him.
Anyway, back on subject. I got off work early today and have spent quite some time constructing the bans, making sure I banned the appropriate ranges. I am not going to directly tell what method I used to ban these abusive bots; however, I suspect this will lighten the load for a bit on the virtual host.
I have also defined a robot.txt file, and have only allowed the popular search engines, Google, Yahoo, Bing, ask, etc.
Additionally, while bzscap.org domain its self is not facing such abuse, I have done the same for that virtual host, same ban ranges and hosts file.
The bandwidth and max connection limit has been lifted from bzuniverse.bzscrap.org. I have no intentions of re-adding this at this time.
Would also like to mention, bzscrap.org has never had any sort of bandwidth restrictions on it, I have taken the time today and put a limit around 35mbps and a max connections of 50. This really is a lot of bandwidth given the fact bzscrap.org only outputs ~120GB per month if ever even reaching 30mbps at one time - Statistics from AwStats. In other words, you should only notice this limitation if for example, you and 2 other friends have a 15mbps connection, all try to download a large file at once from bzscrap. Do the math yourself.
Feeling rather generous giving all this information out, and have probably said too much. I apologize for not acting on the bzuniverse archive situation quicker, it just seemed low priority to me. You should be able to browse them without issue now.
