Editing DXTBZ2 files?

I do not know where to post this. But does anyone know how to make changes to an already existing .dxtbz2 file such as making it grey instead of having colours?

Which is what I want to do but I don't know how, it can really **** up some of the effects when there are permanent colours that can't be customized.

DXTBZ2 files are munged, so they aren't user-readable. You need to find the original graphic (usually a .pic or .tga) and edit that instead.

Okay. How to edit .pic or .tga files?

Just about any competent image editor will do it. Photoshop, Paint.NET and GIMP are probably the best options.

.Tga is editable by just about everything, but the .pic used by bz2 was not widely used. There is a Photoshop plugin for it, you might find it on bz2 scrap.
It's best to convert .pic to tga before re dxtbz2'ing them.

you can use XNViewMP (free) to view and convert .pic files to other formats:

http://www.xnview.com/en/

there is also XNConvert to batch/mass convert.

Irfanview is also capable of this - it doesn't have a batch option but it's slightly faster than XNView and provides a different set of features.

Also, bear in mind that you can also turn PNG and BMP files into DXTBZ2s.

Xnview, and the photoshop plugin can be found on BZScrap.

http://www.bzscrap.org/downloads/Utilities/BZ2/

Pak explorer can be used to find the original base game's images from data.pak.

Updated versions and new images in 1.3 can be found in the Modder Data zip here: http://matesfamily.org/bz2/

It's best to look in modder data first for the newest version of something, then if it's not found there look in data.pak.
