One or two of us have made/are making some "reconstructed stock textures" I have done an ivtank00.dxtbz2 for example, Obviously this is time consuming work. It would be a good Idea if we got together to avoid reproducing the same textures.

Id make them as high res as possible. They can be down scaled if necessary

Anyone is working on 'detail reconstruction yet? As I said, just enlarging textures won't change anything. 1024x1024 should be the 'golden mid'

I hope I didn't give you the impression I had any plans to do this stuff quickly. I have already suffered one bout of repetitive strain injury in my life, have a whole bz2 race to finish creating, a website to build, bz2 patches to test, Bz2 matches to play, and a whole bunch of other stuff to do to. I am simply encouraging people to try and get a bit organised, try doing one themselves and avoid duplicating effort by letting people know its done. Mostly this consists of manually straightening sawtooth edges, adding back bits of detail where they get ruined by upscaling and a bit of noise/blur/sharpen to re-pixeleate the image at its new size. It is a good way to learn the basics of image editing as you don't have the normal problem of deciding what to create in the first place. :)
People don't have to be amazing artists to do this, If you doubt your talent try doing one of the terrain textures, You will either need a tessellation type plugin to make the texture edges match up, or maybe use one of the procedural texture programs to remake a similar image, these would probably be better for those who like software solutions more than brushes.
Anyone who thinks terrain textures could be "recreated" and still look the same, please give it a try, there is surprisingly little to work with in a 256x256 terrain texture if your resizing it to 1024x1024, so something that just "looks similar" would be quite acceptable. I will be extremely rude to anyone using the word "canon" about terrain textures :) :) :)

I've been trying to poke this community to do that for years. Nothing so far. Consider this thread a poke.

All of the original BZ2 textures were 256x256 due to the limitations of the 3dfx Voodoo 1, which maxxed out at 256x256. (Shell background textures were done at 640x480 thru a rather slow process.) I don't know why we didn't do the smart thing of using 512x512, and dropping mips above what the card can do. .dxtbz2 supports doing that.

I'll end up doing a detail reconstruction soon enough.

Started some processing on the "dunes" sequence of textures today.

Gimps step rescale is quite good for terrain textures, still needs some tweaking to restore the seamless tiling afterwards though.
