Occurs whenever I press escape in window mode, regardless of resolution.

try playing with AllowModeChanges = 0/1 in render.cfg or using /safemode on the commandline

AllowModeChanges makes the HUD think it's in 640x480 (and still doesn't fix the problem). Safemode fixes it, but I've still got no idea which of my settings causes it.
