Played a few 5 v 5 strats last night .. mostly using VSR 4.4 pre release.

Everything went well for the most part. Some lag but I think it was caused by a couple players with 300+ pings (off and on).

Minor issues I notice:
Team 1 now shows 5 players, but if there are more on team 1 they remain hidden unless switching to team 2
Server list does not always display properly w/ certain hosts (presumably using upnp) .. Datguy hosted last night, the map nor his name displayed ('player' was listed as his name instead of 'datguy' .. ping and players listed as ???). Other upnp servers display properly, others do not. My host always displays properly as I also have my ports forwarded (17770-17772).
The opposing team sometimes gets alerted to weapon upgrades (random chains sounds, intermittent and one asked why his wep displayed as chain while he was using mini).
Ship bouncing issue (landing from a jump, will often cause the ship to bounce repeatedly, depending on angle of landing - no prob with this in VSR).
Maps do not default to the 'default' ships like before (have to select 'default ISDF and scion scouts manually)
AI units (like scouts) often do not hold when told to do so (even if they are not fired upon by enemy units and when they are out of range)
Scavenger collisions continue -- they get stuck into each other and onto buildings, extractors etc.
giving an order to 'pick me up' or others often have to be repeated (even when the AI unit acknowledges the order) - usually caused by a resync
Friendly fire is now set to off (used to default to on)
Mouse LAG (has always been an issue with BZ2, would be nice to have the mouse more responsive in game which would help with aiming). I find it helps to turn down the steer and pitch settings, pitch seems to be more sensitive than steer so I set the pitch lower than my steer setting. still I find it VERY HARD to aim.

Suggestions:
Add ability in shell to be able to click on links (or be able to copy) within shell.
utilize raknet auto update ability when joining a server with a newer set of files or maps (have it prompt to update upon join)
maybe add 'minesweeper' and or 'chess' or 'battlezone arcade '(or some other entertaining factor) within shell to dull the shell hell wait times as we wait for players? :)

Updating maps from a bz2 host would cause more problems than it solved. This works ok from a dedicated server setup but not from Bz2/s player-server model. At best it would simply be extremely annoying for a host to have to provide uploads while trying to host a game at the same time. It is better for individual players to sort out their own downloads independently, from bz2maps :)

As much as people might like to use in-app downloads for maps/mods -- which RakNet supports, but I could have done w/ a http connection years ago -- there's a lot more to this than just the underlying tech.

First, BZ2 loads and caches a lot of data about what file(s) are locally present on startup or map load. Getting BZ2 to properly flush all data is really hard because any mistake is bad assets time. (Worst case scenario: user plays a stock map, then downloads a misbehaved mod that overwrites ivscout.odf, then loads that mod -- everything, recursively, loaded by ivscout has to be properly unloaded and reloaded).

Secondly, this isn't Windows 98 anymore. The BZ2 folder can be protected by the operating system, and adding/removing/updating any file(s) under that requires admin access for Vista and up. (Technically, XP can have limited user accounts with write protected Program Files, but that's really rare). So, downloading and updating mods would require BZ2 to jump to admin access. I think there's bzone.cfg support to park mods over under the MyDocs folder (99% of the time NOT write protected) but nobody's used that. And then see point #1 above.

So, downloading from the server is a very in-depth feature request, and I'd prefer to wrap up a few bugs for a 1.3.6.5 release.

It'd probably be an equally valid and just as useful solution to have somewhere that can act as a proper map and mod archive, one that can be linked (or just mentioned) in the shell itself. BZScrap has neither enough files nor (IMO) a pretty enough interface, and BZ2Maps doesn't have enough in the way of file storage either. Something like the Filefront mini-sites would be good (this is one I used to frequent).

I think the general idea is to allow bzone to launch the web browser and point it towards a link that is clicked on. I have typically been pointing people to 'short links' in-game (like bit.ly or tinyurl) because they're much easier to remember/type.

Of course, this feature has the capability to be abused just like a shortlink might be to direct people to a shock site, rickroll, or malicious site, its just that it would make it easier to put non-obsfucated links (unlike shortlinks which are always obsfucated), for people to click on them, and to be able to quickly download and install (manually, not automatically through bzone) a map pack, mod or 1.3 update that's being advertised by the server, or to visit a website.

Clicking on links is another feature request, sorry. BZ2's interface library is inherited from Dark Reign 2. It does not really support changing style (e.g. bold, underline, text foreground/background color, or font) within a displayed string. It does not really support hit tests (i.e. determining what sub-part was clicked on). The "outdated version, get a new patch" has a button connected to a hardwired URL in code to spawn a web browser.

BZScrap and BZ2Maps intend to do that, however BZScrap stuff is just a big general repository of things that have only a rudimentary amount of sorting (e.g. no notes on what versions it runs on, you pretty much have to know what you're looking for) and BZ2Maps is more oriented towards maps/mods that will be of interest to ST players. As well, the stuff on the non-forum part of bz2maps tends to become outdated because it's a static site (no CMS or anything), therefore some forum digging is necessary (though not much, as the main downloads tend to be globally stickied)

BZScrap was meant to be the central host of files for several BZ sites that would contain all the needed contextual data.

I played a couple of games now (MPI and ST) with the latest patch (version n) and the games went overall rather smoothly almost as the original 1.3.6.2. However i noted a few minor changes annoyances.

1.) At on least on some maps artifacts (bridges, old building or ships) cannot be destroyed anymore and turned into scrap. That used to be possible and was rather useful, because destroying bridges was an important tactical move and destroying old buildings is sometimes important to provide space for new constructions. This bug is also critical to all the ZTV mpis since you need to be able to destroy power shunts and envelopes to activate alien base defenses and to access mission information.

2.) Vehicles that get engaged by the enemy start ignoring any command. While in a defense mode it makes sense that the ship's ai overrides earlier commands to defend itself, it is nevertheless desirable that later commands are obeyed again. Otherwise things like a tactical withdrawal to a secure position become impossible.

I noticed when keeping the server in the background (alt tabbed) it sometimes silently quits or crashes (possibly due to hack attacks?). The following log files are from cases where bz has silently quit or crashed in the background:

I noticed that an AI that was engaging an enemy, when told to "Follow" the recy (600m away) did not respond, and continued to engage the enemy until it was dead. This might be related to the HOLD command bug.

Bug reports:

1) Music from intros is strange (not linear, sometimes you hear sounds sometimes you don't).
2)When going in tunnels, if I hit the above side (I am very near to the exit), the ship teleports outside
3)Commander Shabaiev had to build an armory and she didn't (mission in single player)
4)When constructor was under attack, tho it was under Shabaiev's command, I received no message of it's danger
5)A sentry was attacking my healer in the mission in which I must protect the hardware, in the corner near the tunnel (outside the tunnel, in left) and I went there shooting and the screen went blue (game scree). I hit escape and I could saw "Abort" and stuff; I hit them, they were not working so I closed with alt+f4.
6)When driving an alien turret (haven't tried with human turret), if you right-click (switch weapon), it shows your ammo (not sure if this is really a bug).
7)In the mission in which I had to defend the scavenger, commnder shabaiev had to left me, but she stayed in base!
8)In the mission in which I had to defend the scavenger, when spawining turrets, they tended to go somewhere else when spawning , instead of staying there.
9)In the mission with the bunker, the sentry started attacking the bunker right away. (Is this a feature or a bug?)
