Crash running z30

Post by crash »

Hello,

first of all, sorry if I made any mistakes writing this. I'm new to this game, but since seems people still update it, I figured why not ask.

I have issue running game on pretty much all latest patches. I'm using Windows 8.1, with total of 4Gb of ram.
I think game is using too much of my ram. While task manager only shows about 200-400Mb usage, which is totally okay (1Gb+ free), sometimes I get warning that game is using too much of ram. This however isn't backed up with information on task manager (60-70% of ram used totally). I think this might be because game is allocating ram quickly then freeing it again (because message asking to close is appearing each few minutes if I close it). Randomly on internet play I get crash messages, which I think indicate game was unable to get more RAM. This wasn't case on original game, but all last patches I tried (z28 and z30, possibly more) ran into this problem.

Here is log which represents the most what problem is I believe.

You can see that problem occurs inside BZ2MemAlloc (which was always case as far as I remember), but rest of stack wasn't always same (mostly in stack I gave anyway).

This exception occured while playing via internet with my friend, who is using exactly same game as me. He never got this issue however.

What application is warning you about "too much memory used"? I have seen Norton could be doing that, and you should turn that nonsense off. Stock Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8 do not have such a message that I've seen. Some programs like Norton try to justify their existence by warning you of trivial issues.

Windows tends to use most of your RAM over time, this is a good thing. If you don't want your operating system to use what you gave it, then put that RAM on a shelf and just look at it. Windows caches files read to RAM because RAM is orders of magnitude faster than HD.

From your log, BZ2 is not out of memory. Process memory is the per-process (i.e. bzone.exe's) addressable space, 2GB max. You've used only about 1/3 of that. Physical memory, swap, etc are all fine.
ERR | ExceptionHandler:191 |20:27:14|259587 |Process Memory : 1385 MB free out of 2048 MB total

I'd recommend checking RAM to see if there's any errors. I use and recommend Memtest86+ which is free, open source.

Windows 8 actually have message like this. It's Windows 8.1 x64 to be exact.

I saw that game doesn't report it's out of memory, however windows say it is... Also crashes seem to suggest that.

Also, I can't believe this issue is related to RAM itself, never got any BSOD/weird game crashes etc. This game is only one that have this problem. Note that message about insufficient ram was shown in past relating to various games, but never made game crash.
However, when I will have access to my usual toolkit with Ultimate Boot Cd I will check it out (this might take some time).

Also, GSH I'm programmer too so I know most things you said, I wonder if there is anything I can show you to help diagnose problem. Would sending you all crash reports help? There are some other stack traces, but some crashes I had might be related to downgrade I tried to perform.

If you tried to perform a downgrade on an existing BZ2 installation it may well now be FUBAR. Your best option is to re-install from disk and patch up to the required version. Since we're on the subject, what install process did you run through to get to z30?

It was default game -> patch 1.3.6.4z28 -> z30 (as far as I remember).

Game shouldn't have problems, since friend who has performed exactly same steps doesn't experience any problems at all.

Also, since I noticed another game have issues that are somewhat similar, I will check if this issue occurs with any other titles in future under any circumstances. However I'm still not sure if this issue with another game was related.

I've got Win 8.1/x64 on one box at home (Core2Due E6600, 3GB RAM, 150GB HD, AMD 5450 GPU) and I've never seen that popup.

I don't have source code handy, but that crash looks like it could not allocate the 16(?)MB of contiguous memory used for a savegame buffer. Memory would have to be horribly fragmented (or corrupted via SW/HW fault) to pull that off with ~1385MB free per Windows.

I encourage posting of crashlogs. The more patterns that emerge, the more crashes that can be fixed.

Downgrading BZ2 patches is not recommended, mostly because of code <-> data dependencies that may become invalid if an earlier patch contains earlier code but not earlier data. It can sometimes work, but determining which patch(es) can go over other patch(es) is too much work and I recommend against trying. Separate installs -- keep a BZ2 1.0/1.1 install from CD .zipped up for quick restoration -- is best.

Is that with 1.3.6.4 between the default game and z28?

Friend told me we upgraded to 1.3.6.4z28 right away, but now I think about it, it can't be right, there was no suck instant upgrade. So there was z28 after this probably.

However right now, I believe it isn't caused by game, but because of something wrong with my computer. It isn't ram itself, but some software is causing memory spikes.
Declared memory on my PC when playing virtually any game looks like: Normal usage -> slowly rises to 100% -> decrases to normal usage quickly. Probably video driver bug? Or maybe something other...
Any ideas guys what It can be? :) Of course it isn't game, but maybe you have idea what can be wrong.

To hint you: Physical memory doesn't seem to raise when this "spiking" of declared memory is going on.
Things I can think of upgrading recently: Daemon tools driver (wasn't used by all games that make this behavior), video drivers, windows...

Z33 is the current version. Z28 has massive resyncs.

Correction z30 has bad resyncs.

This is probably issue we are looking at.

EDIT: Changing resolution to native one works fine, no crashes or warning about memory usage. This also resolved issue for rest of games, so this must be this issue. Thanks everyone for helping :) .
