NatNegotiate Failed: Unknown Error

I get this error when friends and I try to host a game and join.
We are using the latest alpha patch with fix and in stable patch the hosted game does not appear in the server list at all.

1. look in your router/modem to see if NatNeg and UPnP are enabled
2. check your firewall to see if there is an exception for the Battlezone II install you are using.
3 don't install BZ2 under any Program Files folders.

I'm unclear as to what you mean by "stable patch." If you mean 1.3.6.5, that patch series points to a matchmaking server that is now offline.

Assuming both the host and client(s) are running the same 1.3.7-a130* build, and the game can't be seen, that points to an overactive firewall. You shouldn't need any NatNeg/UPnP to get a 1.3.7* build to report to the masterserver, just a firewall/router that allows outgoing HTTP requests. If the client(s) can see the 1.3.7* game listed, but not join, that's where the NatNeg/UPNP/firewall/router are likely culprits in blocking things.

Hello,

I am having the same error (NatNegotiate Failed: Unknown Error). Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly should I look to change via Windows Firewall to allow for BZ2 to connect? As far as I can see, BZ2 is allowed for both Public and Private networks. Could someone offer advice on particular protocol type, local port, etc. I am seeing 'Battlezone II' and 'BZ2' in the firewall... which should I be looking to change?

One extra piece of info that might help find an answer... If I create/join an online session with a computer that is within my same WiFi network, the game can be held without any problems. But creating/joining a session with someone outside my WiFi network, it fails and gives the NatNeg Error.

All parties are using the 1.3.7.1 patch and run great otherwise.

Any help/advice is welcome. Thank you.

I generally do the following:

If it works, great.

If it doesn't work, I forward ports in my firewall or set it to DMZ+ mode, and then it works.

It may not be Windows Firewall.

Your Router has it's own firewall you have to account for.

We had one person who couldn't host for at least six months, he ended up having to get his ISP to edit his router settings.

He had a cable model/router bundle.

Over here you get a modem-router with a cable connection by default. My advice, ask your ISP to set it in bridge mode and attach you own (decent) router. The router in these modems sucks hard and has reduced functionality where part of the functionality cant even be accessed by yourself.

That's what I suggest too.

If the router can be disabled, you are better off buying a decent one.

There's a few issues possibly at play, because there's 3 machines in play. This is true no matter what BZ2 version is being used to play online. It would be very helpful if you noted the BZ2 version shown in the bottom-left of the initial pilot selection ('login') screen for both the server (host) & client machines. Also ensure that both machines aren't set to find games via "LAN Only" mode, not running any MODs, etc. The more information you can provide, the better.

As above, there are 3 machines in play. I'll abbreviate them H, C & M below.
H: The machine who is hosting a game -- i.e. they hit the "create game" button
C: The machine trying to be a client
M: Master server. This holds info about BZ2 games.

Between those three, there are 3 links that need to be open for communication to join.

H <-> M : If this link isn't open, no other prospective clients can ever see the game in the list. Use the 'chat' button to see if others can see your game. Before hosting, if you can see the "latest patch is 1.3.7.1" game, the C<->M roundtrip link can request data. If when you host other clients cannot see your entry in the list, there is something blocking HTTP POST messages

C <-> M : If this link isn't open, then the prospective client cannot see any games. There is almost always the "Latest patch is 1.3.7.1" session in M's list of games. If you can see the "latest patch is 1.3.7.1" game, the C<->M roundtrip link is working.

H <->C : If the client C can see the listing in the games list, but cannot join, odds are there's an errant firewall (hardware and/or software), router, or something else blocking packets between the Host and Client.

If you can, collect the [My] Documents/My Games/Battlezone II/Battlezone*.log file from both the H and C machines from a failed join attempt, and post here.

There is also another problem: When you can see the game but it shows (???), you might be able the join the game, but if its full,
you will get a netneg error.

Thank you all for your replies, it's been a busy week for me, so this is the first time ive had time to sit back down and revisit some BZ2. I haven't tried much dedug yet, however, I messed around with firewall on my PC and no luck... even to the point of disabling the firewall on my PC momentarily and still no luck.

@GSH: Hopefully you can get a better idea from the log data. I only have the one from my PC at the moment. I'll try to get my hands on the other soon.

@GSH: The log i posted above is when I try to join... so here, the one below is when the other computer tries to join a game i created. Both appear to have the same characteristics of NatNeg error message. Hopefully this help.

You may need to manually forward port 17770 TCP to the IP address of your PC if your router doesn't handle UPNP correctly. To access your router, you will need to access the default gateway (usually 192.168.1.1) via web browser (e.g. http://192.168.1.1/). To find out what your gateway (router address) is, open a command prompt (type cmd in the search bar, select 'command prompt') and type the following: IPCONFIG and press enter. This will list your IP address, subnet mask and default gateway. Enter your default gateway address in the address field of your internet browser to access the router login. username is usually admin, password is usually admin, or password, or no password. Thank you all for the tips, I believe I have come to some conclusions with my case. Earlier this week, I was able to join someone else's game who just happened to have a public game up, no error and joined and played perfectly. This new piece of information leads me to believe that the other computer in my duo is part of a network that blocks online gaming and such (its a network at a private college). He made sure that his PC firewall settings were identical to mine, where mine work as is for me. So, since the router for him is not reachable/ configurable, we're pretty much hosed when he uses that particular network.
