Greetings everyone.
I did play Battlezone 2 when it first came out to Australia under the same name that my account is under. (RagingStorm)
I loved the style of play, building a base and attacking in first person kicked ass compared to watching all my units having fun destroy my foes in Starcraft's or the many other RTS top down views. I even managed to stumble across online warfare and had fun playing the G66 mods, MPI maps and the odd Strat game. However I personally loved pilots only sniper maps.
After I decided to play the game again I found out that indeed some people still play the game and 1.3 patch has come about with some interesting changes. Well done to the people who made this happen and thank you to the other MOD'ers that made everything from G66 to Starfleet.
However I did stumble across the No Flight vs Vets debates that seem to be popping up and it did get me thinking about a few things.
My friends and I play Local Lans on the weekends on the hard MPI maps and have great fun working on strategy and defense now that CPU actually knows how to fight. Every now and then we turn on friendly fire allowing out Spire and Archer combo to be less effective as a defensive measure because of friendly fire from the raining mortars. Ever seen what happens when friendly fire is on and you use a group of Maulers to defend a Spire wall? Let's just say a spire or two didn't survive the encounter. However we do enjoy the fact we can shut off or turn on friendly fire on the menu before playing the game and not while playing it.
With all the marvelous server and game setting you can place onto the game would it be too hard to program in a Flight On/Off function on that menu?
Before spinning up a debate on how annoying it is to fight someone who can fly properly. Yes I could fly well vs most players, yes I did enjoy Strat games of fast action mental speed of foes and allies flying around like over grown insects. But I also enjoyed a MPI mission where we forced our way forward using defensive techniques and built up a strike force while repelling the CPU without speeding around Vet Style.
Too sum up my argument, allowing flight setting would allow Vets to have their evil Strats and then other people who prefer normal game play to enjoy it without a Vet jumping into the game and running amuck like a Bull in a china shop. The community is too small to split apart and at least try the menu option before destroying the idea completely.
Cheers for reading and hope this doesn't offend people.
RagingStorm.
Possible solution to flight.

Flying is a physics bug that effected hover units and will never ever come back... I hope... It was never intended to be in the game, and it was annoying when your trying to shoot at those flyers >.>

Seriously, do people like you *try* to get topics locked? And here I thought we were all grown ups here.Dataanti wrote:Flying is a physics bug that effected hover units and will never ever come back... I hope... I will do the civil thing and avoid posting my opinion about why flying is good or bad because we've all been over this a million, billion times. With no results except for topic lockage.

The simple fact is, the physics coding has been re-written. It is not possible to have an option button that reverts to older coding.
Use 2 installs of bz2 so you can play old style 1.2 (alone probably) and 1.3.

Re: Possible solution to flight.
Sadly 1.2 has fallen into disuse from the gradual attrition of players leaving BZ2 for often personal reasons. The fresh blood is attracted to 1.3 thanks to server messages and whizbang new features, and many of the good players are pulled to 1.3 because there are very few hosts -- so therefore 1.2 cannot replenish its supply of new players.MrTwosheds wrote:The simple fact is, the physics coding has been re-written. There are, however, 1.2 ZST games up every friday if you play strat. For good players, it is a nice reason to keep a 1.2 install along with a 1.3 install.

If you ignore post like this, they will not know why people are not posting, there is a chance of bumping or posting a new thread. All I was doing is saying why it's not in 1.3 and my opinion, it's not a big deal.Zero Angel wrote:Seriously, do people like you *try* to get topics locked? Have you ever seen someone say or do something so idiotic that you had to say something? Well, thats how flame wars get started.Dataanti wrote:and my opinion, it's not a big deal.
Example: I could post my opinion on a message board saying that I think republicans are bigoted or why liberal doctrine is so flawed backed by an analysis of mommas boys. It doesnt mean I have to, or even that it's a good decision.
Re: Possible solution to flight.
Flight was one of the first bugs squashed for 1.3, 7-8 years ago. Ken did the work to do that. Restoring it is not going to be an option. It's a bug, it's not coming back. If you want that bug, there are no forced upgrades in BZ2; you can go play 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, or any of the 1.3-series anytime you want. That's the only 'option' you're going to get.
Thread locked, as it's flamebait, and we've been clear for the past 7-8 years that this is how it's going to be.
