I can understand both camps. Marriage is a thing based on religion, but has become a standard even outside of religion. Allowing the actual bond but with an other name is good as it does allow the bond but does not disrespect the religion. Not using the same name does stil make a clear statement that the camps are not the same and a not treated in an equal fashion.

As far as religion is concerned, most of them are just not interested In providing this service to the gay community. So if you are gay and religious then frankly its your problem.
I cant understand both camps, I cannot begin to fathom why a man would want to get married to another man. Male friendships just do not fit into that mould. Most hetrosexuals can barely cope with it as it is, what is the point of adding this extra stress to what is presumably an already firm friendship? If straight guys think about this, about what it would mean to be legally bound and committed to another male friend...Its just a nightmare, all that actually makes the friendship work is broken by the creation of rules.
What they are trying to do is alter marriage from what it has always been, into something else entirely and in doing so they are pushing their values onto others that do not share them, an activity that they should all be very familiar with, as historically its what other people have always done to them. I agree "civil partnership" does not sound the same, but legally its as close as any sane person would want it to be.
I don't suppose there are the same sort of rules concerning "consummation" And I don't expect anyone is about to make some up specifically for them. How do 2 lesbians consummate a marriage? sounds like a good joke, but I don't actually have a good punchline.

I always thought marriage was more of a social contract than a religious thing. After all, marriage does require the signing of a contract and has legal protections, including the enforcement of monogamy if such a thing is desired by the couple/contractees.

From the social contract angle, not allowing gay marriage is a double standard. Not that I particularly care, I just think that people who get wrapped up in the anti gay marriage thing are looking at it from a religious angle, even though marriage is only given that type of value from the people who are engaged in it and not from a legal perspective.

Oh, that's were our rain went.
I don't really care about gay marriage either, I just think they're trying to change it into something it was never meant to be. It is and always has been a contract between different sexes, it exists for the purpose of creating a stable environment within which a family could be made. It is not just between two people, but between and for families.
Does anyone imagine, that the "in-laws" of a gay couples are going to look on their relationship any differently just because they used the same words.
