Vista was an abortion of an operating system; agreed. It was to Windows 7 as Windows Me was to XP
Windows ME and XP aren't even comparable OSes. Windows ME was based on the 9x core which is shared by 98SE, 98, and 95. XP is based on the NT core. I agree ME was garbage and Vista aka ME 2.0 is debatable, but comparing those two isn't a very good comparison.

No, 2K was intended as a server OS. Not a comparison.

Vista was/is an abomination. If it wasn't then Microsoft wouldn't be ending support for Vista SP1 already.
IMO, Vista was basically Windows 7 Alpha.

Vista is the one Windows OS I basically skipped over.

I was a user of XP64. The speed improvement over 32 bit was evident, given the extra gb of ram and TONS of swap it was addressing. I dual booted 32 and 64 XP for a while, and it was clear that 64 bit XP was going to fizzle out as soon as compatibility issues began arising. Finding certain software/drivers, such as the printer, were headaches in and of themselves. Otherwise it was fast, snappy, modern, and niche, and it's going to break my heart when I format that partition someday.

ME was build upon upon Win98 but with some eyecandy and 'usability improvements'. In this case Win98SE was better because it was more stable (provided you didnt install anything :D ).

Win2k was built upon WinNT (with a lot of refactoring done and a lot of features added) and XP was built upon Win2k. XP is the best one, but not much of an improvement over 2k which it is based on (IMO).

Win7 was built upon Vista but made a lot more efficient and stable. Win7 is arguably the best Windows distro so far.

Besides some refinements to the UI, explorer was completely re-written. (windows, not internet)
