QR1 is only alive because the new owners missed it. It won't be up forever, so why go for a solution that's temporary at best?

Do I understand this right now?
No. This about Activision not supporting their own products, its probably only a matter of time until qr1 stops for bz2 too.
There are possible solutions available but how long it will take to get one of them implemented is not yet clear.

6.0-row got an upgrade to qr2, which we never really needed.
Now they don't support qr2 anymore and we are anyways not going back to qr1 ?
No you really don't understand it. If not for the QR2 upgrade, the QR1 would be down already, it will instead be down when they notice.

RIP Gamespy Support
Now that Gamespy's support of BZ2 is in the books, what shall we do to keep the online BZ community alive and kicking?

Tho really, keep people active, spread the news as much you can about using gameranger until a more suitable solution can be found.
Also, join by IP still works, so that can be done too. Basically, people gotta come to the forums and teamspeak and organize.

Not a suitable time for posting ponies. Mods are definitely not asleep.

Isn't money now the only reliable solution? Renting a server.
We don't want to find some free service that on the first problem drops us without a care again.

Servers can be found easily. matesfamily.org is not run out of my home, but a shared server. These forums? phpBB software running on said server.
It's the software run on those servers that's tricky. Gamespy has never released the code for their qr1 or qr2 server backends. If something similar that spoke qr2 and worked well enough, I'd be willing to run it on matesfamily.org.

Cheap web hosting companies may not allow a game server on it. (atleast that is what i've run into)
Probably need atleast a VPS host.
This makes me glad Activision open sourced the activenet server code or we could have had the same issue.

The trick is, it isn't a game server. It's a matchmaking server. Way less data, way less bandwidth.

I explained that to one web host admin, he didn't care and said if he hear's of it again he'll delete the account.
In Bz all it does is handle a chat lobby and the matchmaking. No real bandwidth used.

Change hosts.

I've been testing a substitute as much as possible. Haven't had much help in that regards, N1 is the only one who has bothered to help with testing, and my testing ability as limited as I'm on the road. I'm hoping to help test more if needed.
