Well, maybe, one day. Kind of interested in how they're going to determine who's Scottish and who's not in order to get the vote run. It is also then only logical, that your going to have to determine who is English or Welsh or....Hmm yes what an extremely divisive state of affairs. Its not like any of this has ever been documented in any way other than by birth certificate (paper records of where people are born) Partition will be such a messy bureaucratic nightmare. Hopefully we can avoid violence (the usual outcome of such misguided political stupidity) and peacefully overthrow the "British Establishment" at the same time, because that is where the real problem lies.
It is quite likely that the Scottish will at some point begin to see just just how very difficult, expensive, divisive and dangerous this will actually be and will vote for a party with policies that won't end up with people being forced to choose which nation they want to be a citizen of. It is not the simple clear cut issue they like to think it is.
Can anyone think of an example of a Nation that split without significant bloodshed?

This is unfortunately symptomatic of the pitiful state of politics in the UK. All mouth and no intelligent analysis. Maybe we will get our revolution yet. :)

I would say it should be anyone born in Scotland. If you try to get into the ethnic matter of having ancestry native to Scotland, you would have all the civil rights people up in arms about it, similar to the thirteenth (or is it fourteenth?) amendment debate here in the states. We have the trouble of illegal immigration, but the children of these immigrants are protected by law, making it a tricky situation to work with. Trying to make it only Scottish people then gets into the problem of how much Scottsih blood makes you Scottish, 100%, 50%, 25%, 5%, 1/87, etc. We also have that issue over here with a senate candidate claiming to be Native American. You can tell she isn't, but she claims to be 1/64th Cherokee and used it to advance her life, getting into the question about how much ancestry qualifies you as being associated with the country or ethnicity.

In terms of you question of nation's splitting without much bloodshed, I don't know if you would qualify these, but the countries formed after WWI from Austria-Hungary, Russia, and Germany split mostly without bloodshed( except for Poland and I think one other). Same with the collapse of the USSR, which gave rise to many new nations like Kazakhastan and Belarus without much blood. Also, does India count?

ww1 definitely counts as bloodshed...Millions died in India's partition, and continue to do so.
Examples of success a very very rare.

Problem...there are probably hundreds of thousands of people not born in Scotland who think they are Scottish, and the reverse will also be true for England. This is where its all going to fall down, currently we are all British, have British Passports and no "National" form of identification. How does a Scot living in England have his nationality officially taken from him? or an Englishman in Scotland? We have lived together for far too long for a bunch of fools to divide us up again just because they feel a bit nationalistic.
Having said that, I support them :) because anything that can shake our political system up a bit has to be good.

But the cause of WWI was not that the peoples of these soon to be countries were rising up (Exception being Serbia/Whole Balkan mess)

EX. Czechoslovakia.

While the Czechs and Slovaks were not happy being ruled by Germans and Magyars, they did not get their country out of violent revolution or a democratic process, rather the Allies decided to take pity on them and gave them a country as well as to punish Germany and A-H, mostly Germany.

But I cannot think of a case of partition that was not either preceded by violence or have it result from it.
The Scottish nationalist party are completely justified In wishing to end rule by "Westminster" Our system of government is archaic, ineffective, and fails utterly to represent the will of the people. They actually represent the only realistic challenge to the existing system. I just hope they start thinking about what they are actually trying to achieve. Partition is not the answer, a form of government that actually represents the people of any of the regions is the answer.
How it works in the UK...We vote in a candidate, then they do what they are told to do by their political Leadership or get sacked.
It is not representation.

My god... Do you guys not see what they are doing? Precision timed No-Ops to use of network cycles...

This could be bad. Might dash the hopes the lead developer @ work and I have to do some high frequency trading algorithm programming on the side.

Got to wonder how long that sort of nonsense is going to last. It should have already become clear to some, that turning the heart of your financial system into a form of cyber warfare is actually an extremely dangerous and stupid thing to do. I guess the really big crash is yet to happen...
