Trolls arrived as far back as the text bulletin boards of the early 80's.
It is a sad result of the combination of anonymity, cowardice and mean spirirtedness on the part of someone finally finding an outlet for their lack of self esteem.

"Big Man Behind a Keyboard" syndrome. Yeah, the cyberbullies.
Even half-decent people turn into absolute **** behind a monitor. Maybe even just some of the time.
You had a great archive there and admittedly I pilfered it. I don't know if I ever played a game against you or spoke to you on any occasion, but when the dwindling community loses another member, it's never a good thing.
Good luck to you, deadscion.

I've always said, 'Don't say goodbye, just disappear.'
Not everyone, but as I've seen many times with BZ1, people write long, and sometimes, emotional farewells, because they were wronged in some way. Some say they have, "To much going on." to continue to play and must permanently retire.
It's all quite melodramatic. Much like the way they conducted themselves when they were involved in the game.
Then. . .after a few weeks, or months, and sometimes, a few years, they are back.

A question: "Why not just leave the forum? Why not just play SP and Passworded MP games so trolls can't join? Why leave the game as a whole?"

Only person I've ever seen that said that and never did come back was DiOS. That was a while ago.

Wow, yes, Dios has been gone for at least 6 years.

Most just 'disappear' as you say, BFT.
In BZ's twilight years every player is on a forum when it used to be that maybe most were on one...or several. But definitely not all.

EVERYBODY who says they quit will come back. BZ is a black hole.
Dios was like "see ya guys I'm done" and that was that....it's crazy he's the only one that escaped the black hole

I think many quit when they simply couldn't get the game to run from issues with XP or a video card and assumed that might 'be it' for the game.
Two that quit for years, but returned for a very brief period (few days) was FOX19 and Chubby.

I think it says a lot about the engagement of the game, that it makes people so passionate about it. BZ strat is by far the most intense video game experience I have ever had, and I've been playing video games since they were electro-mechanical-optical.

Actually Chubby was extremely mild-mannered the 2 or 3 weeks he was around.

Yes, Chubby has done a complete 180 but I think the player base is too small to keep him around.
Also; he's old.

I'd quite like to see some of the old FE crew around here. Gray, Chip, Pastell and the like.
