No, that no good I want to be able to hear properly and filter out voices or specific other noises, a headset would destroy the directional/distance properties of all the other noises. You could set it to aircraft, pneumatic drills, your girlfriend.... And if you actually want to hear what someone is saying, you just take your hat off to them.

Then you could wire up multiple uni-directional mics up to several internal speakers on the headset. There are a few headsets out there these days that contain multiple speakers (for surround sound). Just pipe them all through the same DSP unit, you could probably even have a 'sound antenna' that contains several unidirectional mics since the hardware for mics isnt very big. The headset itself might come in a bulky formfactor, but it shouldnt be much bulkier than some of the big audiophile headphones sold today.
