No, the burning process produces free radicals, which are known to be carcinogenic, the caramelisation process is just a form of slow burning. It is unlikely that those drinks are any more harmful than anything else that gets cooked really well, but then you have to consider that many kids get fixated on the stuff and drink little else. So the companies have seen another public image problem approaching and have taken action to avoid it. The justifiably paranoid might want to find out what they replaced the brown colour with... Having got to the point where Governments, politicals and corporations are quite prepared to tell barefaced lies in the face of scientific evidence to the contrary, it is only sensible to adopt a paranoid/neurotic approach to everything.
