What if we buy out (Atari/Activision) the Bz series pc rights and assets? (without the trademark name)
Atari is soo broke they have phone numbers disconnected so maybe they would sell a dead end series that won't effect their psp or console sales.
Anyone interested?

Buying the IP itself is one of my long-term goals, but unfortunately, evidence points to that being owned by Activision rather than Atari.

That is a goal of mine as well.

And hopefully not too many others, lest Activision suddenly become inundated with offers, realise it's valuable, and keep it to themselves.

But it's not valuable. Only a diehard fanatic would want it, and it would probably be a market failure.
I say we wait and pool our resources, get some real programmers with some actual releases under their belt.

^ That made me laugh

And in a way I think it would actually be quite a fun game if it were made.

I agree, it's a dead pc series and Atari doesn't consider it worth puting on gog.com. It's highest value is to people that can do something with it and are hard core fans.
I think Atari would be stupid to refuse a reasonable offer at this point, the title has made all it can make.

All you'll be able to get from Atari is the name, which they used both six and four years ago (and might want to use again, who knows). Most people agree it's Activision we need to speak to.

I suspect it's both companies, actually. Atari owns the name Battlezone. Activision owns the copyright on the files on CD. And, I suspect the original contract between the two -- where Activision rented the name Battlezone for two titles -- didn't cover future digital distribution. Talking to the lawyers of one company is one thing. Talking to the lawyers of both companies is a LOT harder.
Activision has put Interstate '76 on
http://www.gog.com , so they've got some sort of working relationship with gog.com. That title was all Activision, however, no other parties to get involved.

Yes but who owns the IP itself, disregarding the game name.

All rights went to Atari in 2006 per the contract while Activision owns the code.
Some other problems could be that Bz2 used the miles sound system and wasn't there something also licensed from intel?
Bz1 may not have any other license issues except if the title and game is a package deal.
