Battlezone 2's EMBM was never a good feature, especially bad for high res textures, as it's not really a true, live bump or TSN map, it is not affected by the light source at all, it is "baked" over the existing diffuse, unfortunately the best way to emulate shading is through pre-made emb...

You can also get a program called Poly Trans, it can work with any 3d file, and I mean ANY, every option you could think of.

There is a Community Project group in skype, that works just great, so maybe one for the whole community, where people can discus in realtime, much more efficient.

For 3ds max relatively an advanced user gets more from it UVW mapping toolset, but for us average users TexTools will give a mya-like UV expierience, you can do all sorts of things, easily merge than "iron" out UV's good for doing continuous uv's instead of making obvious seems.

There is a sky.renderbeforeterrain feature in the console, this can be nice with some maps and it closely follows what 1.2 done.
