Re: So what do YOU do for a living?

@ SBT: My primary interest is in language as a means for social interaction. I co-authored a book we titled the Interactional Instinct as an alternative to Pinker's Language Instinct arguing that instead of language being innate, language is picked up along the way to building and maintaining social...

Re: So what do YOU do for a living?

Well, I don't get paid for any of the work I do. I have a doctorate in applied linguistics but spend my day to day time as MrsGSH and mom to the lilGSHs. If you had the chance, what career would you go after? A doctorate is nothing to sneeze at, even if it involves EIS. I enjoy both teaching and re...

We watched Terminator last night. My first time. Better than I expected. Surprised this help cement Arnold's career while doing nothing much for the guy who played Reese.

Re: What is the last movie you've seen?

We just watched The Iron Lady about Margaret Thatcher. If this were one of many Thatcher films it might have been passable. But everything was a haze through her dementia which was well portrayed by Meryl Streep, but there was no point. Love her or hate her, she was a major 20th Century figure and t...

I think another part of the issue is whether a child can give consent to a parent. The idea being that the authority-power relationship between parents and children are such that a child may not be seen as having the ability to freely consent, something in the similar vein to bosses and their interns.

Not going to disagree with you there!

The original John Carter is in public domain now. I picked up the series to read on my Nook. Starts here: http://gutenberg.org/ebooks/62.

Re: What is the last movie you've seen?

I felt about John Carter what I felt about The Fifth Element--super interesting world and neato CG, but I wanted the story to stand up better. That said, I do like rewatching The Fifth Element every 3-5 years.

Tell me more about that. We watched it recently and didn't quite feel the same. I'm reading the book that inspired the movie and enjoying that more.

Our latest movie was The Last Action Hero. Wish they had done more with the spoofery.

Re: What Have You Learned Today?

I have been fascinated with solar concentration all my life. I was into it for a little while as a young adult, but I was living in apartments at the time and unwilling to sneak around management to get up on the roof. If I had gotten into it while living with my parents, I could have done more. Th...

Re: What Have You Learned Today?

I learned how to plot modulus equations on a Cartesian Plane. They look pretty neat however finding x and y intercepts is a pain (you have to consider 2 answers for the modulus brackets). I remember my first use was with my dad to make a parabolic template to make plywood pieces to assemble a solar...

Hmm. I haven't tried that, but I might because it's way too hot here to want to turn on the oven any more than necessary. I'll let you know what happens.

Re: The DELICIOUS Recipe Thread

And here I was going to post my roast chicken recipe. How about baked oatmeal then? It's a staple around here: 3 cups oatmeal 1 cup milk 1/2-1 cup sweetener (sugar, brown sugar, honey) 1 cup dried fruit (optional) 1 cup nuts (optional) 2 eggs beaten 1/4 c oil 1 tsp cinnamon pinch salt Mix up in a 9 ...

Re: Plugs for Good Companies/Products

I like Costco stuff on a time-quality-price basis. Good enough savings, good quality, don't have to do endless hours of research on my own. Eddie Bauer has a lifetime guarantee on its stuff. We sent in GSH's 1989 rain jacket and they sent us over $150 in store credit. Jansport has fixed and sent bac...
