Interesting article thread

Post by Iron_Maiden »

Just thought i'd bring up a thread to post an intresting news article daily that I may find, and as a result you all, may find amusing. Think of it as a Drudgereport microcosm. We'll start off with this one I found on yahoo that may interest us intrested with life on other planets.

http://news.yahoo.com/russian-scientist ... 3QD;_ylv=3

The Indo-Asian News Service reported Saturday that a Russian scientist has published what he claims is evidence of life on Venus, Earth’s nearest neighbor in the direction of the sun.

Leonid Ksanfomaliti, an astronomer based at the Space Research Institute of Russia’s Academy of Sciences, analyzed photographs taken by a Russian landing probe during a 1982 during a mission to explore the heavily acid-clouded planet.

Venus is roughly the same size as Earth, but it has a thick atmosphere dominated by carbon dioxide. With an atmospheric pressure 92 times Earth’s, a waterless and volcano-riddled surface and a surface temperature of 894 degrees, the planet has never been considered a serious target of research into the possibility of extraterrestrial life.

But in his article, published in the magazine Solar System Research, Ksanfomaliti says the Russian photographs depict objects resembling a “disk,” a “black flap” and a “scorpion.”

“What if we forget about the current theories about the non-existence of life on Venus?” he wrote. “Let’s boldly suggest that the objects’ morphological features would allow us to say that they are living.”

Other research has suggested that liquid water may have once covered Venus, but the scientific consensus suggests that there have been no oceans there for at least 2 billion years.

The Venus Express spacecraft, built by European engineers, has been observing the planet since its 2005 launch. Scientists working on that project have not reported similar findings, but they also have not ruled out the possibility that life — albeit microscopic — could still lurk there beneath the clouds.

The project is largely dedicated to analyzing what its leaders describe as a “greenhouse effect”-related eco-catastrophe that once converted Venus into an uninhabitable wasteland.

Ksanfomaliti cautioned that the objects he wrote about seem to “emerge, fluctuate and disappear” in different photographs taken from a variety of vantage points.

Hmm... I think... No, no. That mission couldn't be an attempt to draw parallels between Venus' atmosphere and Earth's global warming crisis.

Claims of pictures but...no pictures.

It was in 1982, it informed us of the atmospheric conditions there, The term Greenhouse effect is a description of what is happening there, at 92% co2. It initiated concerns over our own increasing c02 atmospheric content.

co2 is nothing; methane and water vapor are what does it.

the commies/socialists hype co2 because then they can try to tax wealthy countries on it and "spread the wealth". my answer to that will always be, 'bite me'.

Adele is a talented artist, it's not as though she doesn't deserve it. Records are made to be broken, right? (pun not intended)

Besides, the Beatles weren't that great to begin with.

Think of the music itself what you will (I'm not that fond of it), but there is no way anybody can claim there are that many singers who are as good.

And I'd hardly say the beatles were the revolution on their own. Plenty of other bands in the sixties who did exactly the same things. Rock music would still be the same today if we'd had no beatles.

Intresting development in the ongoing Libya saga, how will the new government deal with what may, though unlikely, bring forth a new civil war:

I don't care about the computer algorithms generating ads, but so help me if they mess up my search results.

I seem to be particularly bad at searching and having everything on the first few pages plastered with annoying ads for things I am not interested in, or deceptive links to even more ads is sometimes very frustrating. It wasn't so long ago that you could just do a simple search and actually find what you are looking for, Now it seems I am to be eternally lead astray or taken to yet another search engine which will also fail to find what I'm looking for, but show me lots of ads on the way. I hate it.

It had occurred to me though that you could set up a browser utility/company dedicated to tricking these algorithms into showing totally blank 0 bandwidth cost adverts... :) I would be quite happy to pay a little for that.
I find obligatory ads preceding videos to be particularly annoying, my connection is not the fastest and it is quite rare for a video to get streamed smoothly without pausing, finding that I have to watch an ad doing this in order to watch a video doing the same is enough to make me not bother at all.

It also occurs to me that if the likes of google are going to keep these "profiles" of me, then I should have the right to access and alter them, should I wish to.
