NASA tries a dropship

Post by GSH »

See this. If it works, great. Does have a ton of pieces that all need to work reliably, though. It'll all go into action August 5 about 10:30PM PDT. Official video here.

Yes, the "7 minutes of Hell" landing attempt.

I have a feeling it'll work out. That's a rather payload they're trying to land over there.

I give it an 80% chance of landing without damage.

This IS a test run. This system is a first time event with all working together.

So many 'first time' and 'what if' type of scenarios I am afraid this may become 2012's shortest comedy ...

You have to get an earth ton on the ground from just under mach 2, down to ~2mph . . . in a soft vacuum. A very big feat.

I'm currently watching the event coverage on Xbox live (which is surprisingly good). It's quite astounding to say the least.

Congrats, NASA. It worked.

Two interesting links. One mars orbiter taking pictures of the lander, and some funny 'tweets' about the landing.
