I will not be taking up BZ2 again.

BZ2 version 1.2 is fun to use as is for remembering the way it was long ago.
I only wanted to do the single play stuff and remember, but BZ2 1.2 does not work well alone in Linux Wine.
I will give GSH credit for the improved performance his 1.3 patch has in Linux Wine.
However, after all these years GSH has never learned the lesson, all games evolve based what users do with them.
I have seen this many times in the past few years, since the creation of Battlezone 2.
GSH's anti cheater rhetoric has saturated the 1.3 patch so badly, even the single player stuff is not enjoyable.
What harm is there in changing things up in the single player games if I am the only one it affects?

I will quietly place my beloved BZ2 back in the archives while I still have good memories of the fun days and the talented users who used to give life to the game in many ways far different from what it was and is today.

Thanks for reading I wish you all well, even GSH.

I'm not going to argue with your opinion, however I am going to say something about 2 things:

DO NOT, I repeat .. DO NOT blame GSH for the anti "griefer" stuff as he is not to blame for that, others are.

You're not the only one it affects, I for one play the SP-campaign from time to time and it still has plenty of entertainment value to me .. after playing it 50 or so times.

Battlezone II single player works on Windows 7 without a patch. Try it on Linux Wine, who knows, maybe you're cutting your system short. Could be playing our favorite game. :-)

I respectfully disagree, deadscion. Hail GSH!

I miss the people who played regular strats in 1.2, but certainly don't miss a version of BZ2 with frequent AVs caused by any of the clients typing 'certain characters' to take a server down w/ the dreaded AV. Nor do I miss the frequent warp and lag of 1.2. 1.3z19 corrects 90% of why many left BZ2 to begin with.

Hmm, Mr2 goes looking for an old game site, so he can make posts about how he isn't going to play it anymore... oh hold on, isn't that a bit of a completely pointless thing to do?

THE SENSE! To OP, in all seriousness though, if you don't want to play it, don't play it.

Yea, too bad GSH didn't bend to that vocal minority that want everyone to exclusively play the game the way they do... Pity...

Stop wallowing in your unsubstantiated confirmation bias.

I keep meaning to set up a PC to try the latest 1.3... but that means I have to install windows on something, and I never can get over that hump.

What you running acne? Mac, linux? (if linux, which distro)

I got bz2 working on wine, but it was an earlier version of wine (1.4 I think?). Needed to install the 1.3 dependencies (e.g. d3dx9, vcrun2008, etc), go to dll overrides and set dbghelp to native, builtin. I forget if I did anything else. I know Commando was having trouble getting it run on his flavor of linux.

I mostly run a mac, but I have an old ubuntu laptop behind the TV hosting rSync. I tried wine a couple years ago, but it was pretty much unplayable.

Maybe we can trick GSH to porting it all to Unity, and then we can all play, on our phones too.

I knew there was a good reason to stick with playing old games.

I think I have it up and running now.

Had to do the following
1. Go to Menu -> Other -> Configure Wine
2. Open up the Libraries tab
3. Typed dbghelp. It was set to native automatically

At this point, bz2 errored due to me not having direct x 9 drivers.

1. Opened up Menu -> Administration -> Driver Manager
2. Driver was set to "xserver-xorg-video-nouveau" changed it to "nvidia-319"
3. Rebooted linux

At this point I was able to get in-game and I was able to adjust my graphics settings.

That's good. I *hate* the nouveau drivers. They're an open-source version of the nvidia drivers and while they've gotten reasonably well for desktop compositing, they're rather buggy and not so great for games.
