RIP: LucasArts ('s internally developed games)

Post by GSH »

LucasArts to do licensing only, no internal development. See here or here.

Game development at Lucasarts has been dead for years, but Disney has finally been brave enough to admit it.

Yes they have made games recently, but when they are of the quality of Force Unleashed 2, a 4 hour long cutscene, or Star Wars Kinect, which wasn't much, if any better, it turned into a company that was mainly kept around because no one wanted to admit that they hadn't done anything of value for years now except for the publishing of the Lego games.

Many of Lucas's recent hits were externally developed. Star Wars: Battlefront 1 & 2, which I worked on, were the highest-selling Star Wars titles ever. (Disclaimers: that highest selling games was circa 2005/2006; I think Force Unleashed 1/2(?) did better; I also only heard that informally so take all this with a giant grain of salt unless you can find a hard citation elsewhere). Pandemic Studios developed Battlefront 1 & 2, Lucasarts handled some QA, localization (translation), publishing, etc.

A better list would include whether those titles were internally developed or not.

I can only hope that Disney (which now owns Lucas* properties) allows gog.com to re-release Lucasarts's back catalog..

Don't get me wrong, Battlefront was and still is a great series. I even play it with my friends when I can.
It's just in the last 3-4 years it has gone down hill.
That said I am really enjoying Star Wars the old republic right now but as far as I know Lucasarts wasn't really a part of that and left the actual publishing up to EA.

The Old Republic was developed by Bioware, all LucasArts did was license the IP. Likewise KOTOR and KOTOR 2 (which was then developed by Obsidian).

Looks like EA's going to be developing Star Wars games now instead. Disney does have the rights to make some other games based on the Star Wars license.

Specifically, EA has NOT been given the right to make social, mobile, or web games with the license. THANK GOD. People who make Battlefield now have access to StarWars IP? Battlefront 3? Disney's overbearing influence might indeed prevent bullshit from EA such as always on DRM, day one DLC, etc etc (or it might push for it, but that is unlikely since even EA knows how much people hate that, difference being EA will milk consumers anyway, Disney has an image to uphold).

Just think, we could have had Battlefront 3 made by Pandemic.

That said, last I heard the BF3 was in Crytek's hands.
