BREAKING: Rebellion Bringing Back Atari Battlezone in VR

It's cool to see the title rebooted. However, Battlezone I and II are what we really want! Not yet another shooter, but a shooter + realtime strategy hybrid, with similar atmoshpere... still, perhaps this is the beginning of a more extensive reboot?

The Atari Battlezone series and the Activision Battlezone series are, unfortunately, two distinct entities. We know Atari own the former, but evidence regarding the latter is contradictory; Dx claims it returned back to Atari but has never proven it, while articles published at the time of Rebellion's purchase quite clearly excluded it.

Reading from their website, they not only acknowledge our Battlezones' existence but also infer they are part of the Battlezone "franchise" and "series". In the FAQ they say they are "rebooting" it. I suspect this is only the beginning.

I swear i saw this exact same thread a few months ago.

EDIT: Same company, same IP, different use of it. I jumped the gun with that a bit early.

Deleted - misunderstood "same company, same IP, different use of it" as a claim that the two BZ IPs are the same.

Yes.
The point I suspect is that you (and about 7 billion others) also do not yet own a VR headset. While the Arcade format is not actually popular, its the only one that is viable using publicly accessible equipment.
Another epic fail called BattleZone on the radar? :)

Sharp AH!, no I don't have a VR headset...

What these things really need is a full motorcycle helmet setup, with powerful sound dampening, a restraint couch, life signs monitor...They will sell millions when parent realize it's just like Turning The Kids Off.

Instead of hoping this fails, we should support it. This can easily lead into Rebellion's involvement with BZ1 and BZ2.

I don't hope it fails. They are doing what they can with a new technology, someone has to make software to run on VR systems in order to sell those systems. BattleZone is an excellent choice. You have to see things in their context, When it was made Atari BattleZone was NOT boring! It was awesome!
You could never play it for long enough in an arcade to find out that it was boring. The whole purpose of an arcade game is to show people a product, get some cash off of them and free up the controls as quickly as possible for the next punter. :)

There have been a few games at university built for the Occulus Rift, and whilst I haven't been involved with developing for it yet I have had the pleasure of using the end product. It is far more versatile than you might expect. I've seen Amnesia and Mirror's Edge run on it too, and both are incredible.

I'm thinking that really VR is going to need new input devices, like motion sensing gloves and boots. A move away from hollow mesh modeling might be needed too, actually sticking your head inside apparently solid objects might be very weird.

The Razer Hydra pairs well with it, as do existing situation-realistic controllers. I expect the new upcoming Sixense STEM and Virtuix Omni will perform similarly well, though I do worry that the Omni might fall into the territory of being simultaneously too realistic and not realistic enough.
