For some reason, I've always just accepted this as an arbitrary part of the game.
Assault tanks turn their turrets on a 45 degree angle upwards when they are idle.
Why the hell?

Hydraulics.
You tend to push the oil out of your cillinders when your hydraulic system isnt working for some time, which makes me believe the hydraulics on an Atank pull the barrel up instead of push it up.

As a representative of the ISDF Engineering Corps, I would like to once again explain that due to cutbacks we have had to adopt some designs that use higher mechanical tolerances than before. These design choices save the ISDF resources that we can therefore use to replace scavengers and engage on hiring campaigns for more scavenger pilots to offset the high rate of attrition of scavenger pilots in our organization.

I believe it is probably that the default position (of the class, not the model) of the x turret is halfway between its max & min pitchs. The assault tank has a very shallow minimum pitch.

I have a simple policy in my army for dealing with this:
Pilots can look anywhere they want, as long as they're shooting at enemies while doing it.
