La Fae (Warning: Many Images)

Post by Clavin12 » Sat Feb 26, 2011 2:39 am

Hi,

Unfortunately the bzu forums went down right when I was going to post this. For some time I have been developing and modeling for a race called the Fae. They are based on fairies and goblins and the like and are very organic and spritely in design. Unfortunately, due to the extend period of time over which I did the modeling, I found myself going back to old models and finding them atrocious. Also I have not done any texturing. I will start that soon, as I plan to buy a graphics tablet. Anyway, here is a sample:

And here is some inspiration:

How do you like the model, and do you think this race is worthy of development? I could not find any pictures that really reflect what I'm thinking of, but we could use the concept of the fairy ring and a slight inspiration from the WOW elves.

Thanks,

Clavin12

Make a giant tree based walker, oh project director head of foliage (PDHF)

No, I haven't forgotten about that :)

DO remember about poly counts and collisions. With units you either get a sphere or a box and no other real control. If you can adjust for these you might have something unique and interesting.

I like the idea of an advanced biometal using race that pushes more "Bio" than "Metal"... :)

I think it'll take vertex animation, like Lizard's dinosaurs, to pull it off right, though. Still an interesting and worthwhile idea.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. I can probably adjust for boxes and spheres, N1. Keep in mind that these are only based on fairies, and not the tinker bell fairies either. These are old, cunning, and wild fairies. I can probably handle vertex animation. Unfortunately, if I recall, you can't loop animation. Anyway here are some more samples.

A scout like unit.

And the equivalent of the walker. (this is what I was going to use looping for. The idea was that it would hover close to the ground and when it move the bottom would spin.)

btw, who might you be paraphrasing RD?

Nice models, but those curves taste of 100k polys :)

The scout is good, but the rest seem a little spindly. And as NK1 said, collisions would be awkward.

Yup. BZ2 collision says no to almost all your models. You would be shooting at clearly blank space and still hit them.

The walker would use a box shape and thus fit pretty well.

Can you show these with smoothing off? Maybe the poly count we are seeing is artificial.

Here are the three so far without subsurf. However, the walker, which is highest poly of them all, is only 7k with smoothing.

OK, seeing those, try simply quadrupling the poly count (1 fold increase).

All right. Most of them look pretty good that way, but I won't bother to post them as they look so similar to that last ones. I will be posting new ones soon though.

And of course use normal smoothing in addition and not just smoothing that adds polies.

First of all, great to be back people. Sad thing about what happened to the Wiz, and the strong little community we had going on at BZU. I hope this site can help us get back on our feet and come out even stronger in the end.

Secondly, intresting models Clavin. Do you have any kind of story for these Fae people as of yet?
