Also, considering there is a rec just for the purpose of no rouge AI pilots running around, I think a 1k poly pilot might be pushing it. 1k in itself is fine, but I wonder about the swarms. Then again, the same mesh over and over is faster to draw then a bunch of different ones.

Pilots are easy to LOD due to their small size.

How many layers of LOD can a unit have?
