When do you like to hit CTRL+B?

Post by forgottengames »

Ever since 1.0, I've always seen CTRL+B as a judicious tool that only the most righteous of players should use. So when do you use it?

When getting the enemy recycler or remaining factory down to near 0 HP in hopes that the chunks from my craft will finish it off. Else upon defeating the enemy team (sometimes I blow everything at once).

I remember a couple of years ago being in a game with Billy Boy where he was *literally* yelling at me over teamspeak so I blew all his GTs while he was desperately pleading with the host to kick me.

Yeah, good times.

Why would you blow up a sniped craft instead of running away and using the ship?

In 1.2, there was a player who was notorious for sniping all of the enemy turrets as they deployed. The only way to get pilots back in the ships in early game was to pilot the sniped turret, build a scavenger, have the scavenger pick you up so the pilot could get into the turret, then blowing up the empty scavenger to get some scrap back. I suppose that would work in 1.3 as well, but with starting turrets this isn't as common.

I believe blowing up 30 scavengers on the enemy Recycler did significant damage to it, but I don't recall how much.

Not sure how many scavs you have to blow on a rec to kill it. I think its around 40 to 50.

GSH is ALWAYS in your ship riding with you... :D
It annoys me when people bail because they're losing a dogfight in strat.

Lol at this.

Anyways, people who bail a ship just to mess up the game get banned.

if you're near their base and are going to die, you could bail over some ground where their scavs can't get at the loose.

The correct times to eject are:

A: in the hope of destroying something with your carcase.
B: Needing to get your pilot somewhere fast (nose down and eject).

Now, if you actually run into B more than twice a year, you are probably doing something wrong. We are talking like, the last mission of BZ1 "I gotta get to the dust off site" sort of thing and not "oh snap my base is under attack".

Bailing because you are going to lose is a dick move. Unless I guess if the enemy is really low on health, you are out of ammo, and you can get close enough for case A.

You could, but there's not much of a point to that.

Due to the fact that players cannot ghost in 1.3 and fast-running is not as powerful as it was in 1.2, there are very real probabilities of players dying even when they try to run. In that case the best thing to do is to (1) Fight anyways, preferably choosing a place where your scavs can get the loose from dead ships (like closer to your side of the map), possibly lucking out and having a teammate show up to help you out, killing the enemy yourself, or simply buying your other teammates time (since the people engaging you are tied up with you and unavailable to other tasks), or (2) Run anyways. If you run home, and even if you die halfway there, theres a greater chance of your commander collecting the 'loose' scrap from the battle and using it to build you a better unit (like a Tank, or Full Scout).

So yeah, there is zero reason to CTRL+B in a strat game, at least for the purpose of netting your team scrap (except in an obscure situation where your commander is saving for a sabre on green scrap and has a scav to collect the loose).

On the other hand, there's always the 'bail to save score' where you jump out of your ship before it gets killed. I've even had my ship saved a few times by doing that (because an empty ship falls faster, it can help sometimes to jump out when high in the air and being pursued with certain chance of death).

i'm talking about mere seconds, where you have this >.< much red left and the ordnance with your name on it is on its way. at least position your ship over some rocks or something where the scavs will be wasting time trying to get to it when your ship blows up.

Honostly .. never ..
When trying to take down a recy I could understand it if it has 0% health, else you're better of just getting more ammo. N1 gives a nice option under 'B', but how often does that leave in non-SP games?

The only time I really see anyone do it is in a DM (the actual gametype & the confrontation between players in ST), and that is mostly just to deny someone the kill. Those 'few' particular players also tend to be rather .. er .. exentric and will not quickly find themselves invited to a game I might host.

To instantly remove your craft from radar.
To instantly get the enemy ai to stop targeting your ship and target something else.
To instantly play for a few seconds as a RTS commander from in air.
To draw attention of human enemies to your pilot while you attack with other ships.
I'm sure there are many more.
