they make cell phone games any way not like I have the time or the money for those.
In the mean time I think I will get a copy of guild wars 2 and play that for a bit.
and who here dose not have mindcraft?
I will still try to fix my mod but till this is sorted out it is dead in the water just like most things that need 4+ player MP testing.
I can only hope this is not the end of 1 of the gratest games I have ever played....

As an intermediate crutch we could use a forum to advertise running games so people can join via IP. Not sure though how many of the regular players know this forum.

Thanks much for the guidance on the fallback options, particularly BZScrap on TeamSpeak3... http://www.gametracker.com/server_info/ ... 8.26:9957/

Setup was easy, and good to see some familiar profiles/channels. I'll be out there often, and it's encouraging to see such a resilient community! :)

Any news from GSH about the issue?

There's got to be a way we can circumvent this, without the use of GameSpy.

Games can be arranged by teamspeak etc, but obviously this involves more organisation than many players want to bother with.
Seems to me this would be a fine time for "Open Source Man" to show up with a matchmaking server solution...
If this is, as it looks to be, a company trashing existing services in order to boost its own paid service uptake, then quite a lot of people will be requiring a similar solution.

Can someone give me the specs a server hosting company would need so I can at least get a couple of prices for us to review?

Hosting a gamespy server shouldn't require a hosting company. It should only require a spare computer. The problem is we need two things to make hosting possible, assuming the servers don't come back up.

1. We need the software to run that serves as the gamespy server. This would be running on the server's computer.

2. We need a way to tell bz2 to look for the gamespy server at a specific ip and possibly port. Right now, that is hard-coded. I believe we could tweak that in qr1, but we can't in qr2.

I have a reseller webhosting account with Hostgator and use that to host bz2maps.us and my other sites. Let me know if I can offer anything to help with this, free of course.

I have a server which I can use so hardware isn't an issue.

Hosting matchmaking software isn't that hard. I could probably run some code on dreamhost, as matesfamily.org (and forums and bugzilla and others) is already there. It's the NAT negotiation ('natneg') side of qr2 that's a lot more tricky, as it's specialized server side code that requires a lot of tuning, tweaking, and debugging.

I've pinged Gamespy thru multiple avenues this week. Heard nothing, which is why I've generally been silent. I'm not keeping secrets from everyone. I'm not going to give a different answer when poked privately. I suspect that GDC Online took up most of their attention this week.

If any changes require additional software on people's boxes, I'd recommend looking into something like Hamachi or similar products, as that would make a big (fake) LAN available.
