Another One Is Coming Back

So I'm in my class watching BZ films on youtube while my instructor prattles away when this guy sitting behind me tells me he used to love to play BZ. He's interesting in playing again and if he can't find his cd I will help him aquire the game (legally of course). Yay. He's interested in the mods but since I'm still deciding which one I want to install first, I could only take him to the website. What's a good mod for my new homie to start out with?

May I recommend: no mods. BZ2 out of the box isn't like eating stale bread and water only. I'm biased, but I really don't get this attitude that mods are the only way to play any and every game.

Get through BZ2 first. After that, you're left with some difficulties; only QF2 (released three weeks ago today) definitely works with the newest patch, and it's most definitely not easy-going.

Well, it's not the ONLY way to play. It's just, after eating the same food for 12 years, you want a new flavor every now and then
VSR map pack works with current too.
Soon I plan to release updates for the following mods: BZC, Epic, Dune Command, ZE(maybe?), QF2 (patch) and VSR (MPI mode added)

But if someone is new, they've not been having the same thing all over again.
1.3 adds many more maps, AIP sets, etc out of the box. There's a lot that's included that wasn't in 1.2.

I'm on the same page when it comes to game altering mods or those intended to 'boost the visual aspects', however most games I play have been modded .. slightly. Usually it is just to fix what the developers didnt deem necessary or what seems out of wack to me, or even simpler, to increase the fun I get out of a game.
Eg; In RTW I gave all faction 10k extra starting cash and made all villages have at least 1500 in population, this makes the game a lot more active from the start and allows factions like the Barbarians to pack a punch. I.o.w. it makes for a lot more competitive game, specially as the Julii.

Mods are currently a cluster ****.
There's QF2 if you want some SP.
VSR if you want to play with ppl who are better than you and will probably tell you so, a lot.
And **** all else that works properly.
Just play stock.
And I am a modder telling you this.
Edit: Well there is BZC though GBD is bug hunting in that atm. THAT mod is worth is but it's a total conversion so think of it as a new game.
Edit2: Removed accidental swear filter dodge.

Also, mods tend to split the community for multiplayer. As many (most?) mods do not play nice with others, you only can play with others who have the same mod(s) installed. Thus, you're subject to lock-in to what others play. As noted above, some lock-in would be with players who are less friendly, unfortunately.

Hey, I got demoted from drunken to sober scav.
I'm sure my classmate meant 'what are good mods after I'm done with singleplayer.' He He actually remembered Shabieyev (sp) and scions and biometal and stuff and seemed psyched that there was this active community. Mods shouldnt split a community. Not in the world of 5 terrabyte hard drives. I'm not gonna stop playing 'vanilla bz' just because I install a mod. I'll just install both to seperate folders and if for some reason they get wonky, I'll put one on a virtual machine. And if that fails, well, I got six computers. I must mod some games. The point was that it looks like we're gonna get another dood to join the fray. That should be grounds for celebration, and maybe getting drunk before having to do another shift on the darn scavenger again.

First stop, then, is to install the 1.2 patch and play FE.

I agree, he just needs to make sure his friend doesn't install 1.3 over a 1.0 first xD

You do realise that FE is a mod like all the others?

He was asking for a good mod to start with, and I gave him one.

You know, I know, but I've seen a fair number of people comment believing that FE is an expansion and not a mod.

We have said FE is a mod with the quality of an expansion. Some people shorted the phrase with metaphor.
