So I got the option to upgrade today, and I would almost certainly have upgraded already if it weren't for potential compatibility issues. Does anybody know whether or not BzII will be able to run on it? Thanks in advance.

I don't think 1.3 needed any changes to be compatible with Windows 8.* -- I've spent a lot of time doing things the proper Windows way. So, you'll probably be ok running 1.3.6.5 on Win 10. Older versions, you're on your own.

The upgrade from Win 7/8 to Windows 10 is a free upgrade for the first year of Win 10's release. As shiny as Win10 might be, waiting a month or so might be a really good plan. Make sure all your programs are certified against Win10, then do the upgrade.

(Still annoyed somewhat that my Vista box at home doesn't get a free upgrade. They should pay me for putting up with that; I'll take a free upgrade as payment.)

Unless it doesn't invalidate my 7 key I'll probably buy it separate and dual boot via a 2nd SSD.

i'm wondering if MS will limit programs that run on it to programs that you can only buy through their store.

their specifications page is not found yet: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows ... ifications

i am suspicious of them giving it away for free to current windows users - talk about a trojan horse...

reminds me of the soldiers giving away candy for free to the native children in south america, only to have their parents find them dead the next day.

me, i'm going to wait and see.

It reminds me of the useless hybrid win 3.1/95 os I had to replace fairly quickly after an "upgrade". It was neither one thing nor the other and not "supported" by anyone. O/s upgrade = marketing ploy. Avoid.

RD; if Windows were to do that they'd find themselves in serious trouble. It's simply insane - and a terrible business decision. Even if they did try it it would be a week at most before some enterprising hacker found a way to bypass the restriction.

There's nothing forcing anybody to upgrade now; you'll have an entire year after release to think about it. That's plenty of time for you to figure out what Windows 10 is like. The tech preview have been available for months (and doesn't limit you to Windows Store programs), so you can easily see what it's like.

The catch will be that you will have to buy it again later once the real release is finalized, try before you buy or put up with things not working properly because it isn't actually windows 10.
Obsolete your win 8 oem/win 10 "upgrade" install and you will end up not having anything to reinstall from.
An operating system is something I just want to use, not replace every few months on a whim.

If Microsoft is smart, they will make windows 10 cheap to compete with the rising free OSs that are actually useful (you can game on the damn things) and integrate a store much like how Google integrates the play store into Android. If they do that, I have no problem, I might even buy a card game app for 99 cents.

I hope to god they do something that can compete with Steam at some level without pushing steam out in an anti-competitive way. An app store could do that.

thanks, mts; didn't know it was try-then-buy; ugh.

it's like going from the dock to a rowboat; think i will wait or maybe i'll move to/double-boot linux.

That was a disproven rumor wasn't it?

looks like it:

"As Microsoft Program Manager for Windows Terry Myerson described it:

This is more than a one-time upgrade: once a Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it current for the supported lifetime of the device –at no additional charge.

the wording kinda makes it sound like the upgrade is only free for one year; figuring they might want to re-phrase that.
