Why does nobody play battlezone?

When I log on to multiplayer nobody is playing! I play with real life friends, but sometimes I'd like to practice with other people online. Was this game popular when it was first made? The graphics aren't that bad either, seems like a really good game for it's time.

The game was full of bugs when it first came out and many were not fixed till 1.3, some even became key gameplay elements in those versions prior to 1.3 such as ghosting and flying. Right now the game has four big issues, the modders who play casually are very busy in real life, the self proclaimed veterans who play only play with people they know, there is rampant griefing going on which was bad enough that time was taken away from bug fixing in 1.3 to go to anti-griefing adjustments, and the game is 10+ years old in a world where the most popular games are no-think twitch shooters.

*nobody*?

That's odd. I can usually find an ST game being hosted by someone, in some cases 10/10 games at certain times of the day. At other times, perhaps there are no players, but it does not happen for long.

As opposed to the 'real' veterans. Who spend countless hours playing in unlocked open joinable games, i'm sure. ;)

I prefer to reserve the word for people who serve in IRL military personally. I think veterans of a game is silly. Be it noted that many 'vets' are self proclaimed, it is just a matter of if other people laugh at them or not when they say it that decides. But still, these vets are now playing in more open games simply because they have trouble getting the gold old 'vets only' games together.

Which time zone are you in, Zaroth? GMT is certainly more awkward to play in than others, which probably attributes to other players saying I "never play".

Also, what version are you using? If it's a older version before 1.3.6.2 then upgraded to this version. If no games are active or full already you can play solo against bots until a game becomes available. You could also start a game and wait for others to join. Be prepared for some to leave a game after joining; I call em wimps cause they don't finish what they start. Least that's what I seen lately. ;)

I tend to call them short on time since more often than not, that's what they are. I rarely ever have time for a full-on strat or MPI. Which is why I don't play much.

The most active versions are 1.3 pb6.2 and 1.2, and it's your choice which to use. Personally, I would recommend 1.3.

vet·er·an   [vet-er-uhn, ve-truhn]
noun
1. a person who has had long service or experience in an occupation, office, or the like: a veteran of the police force; a veteran of many sports competitions.
2. a person who has served in a military force, especially one who has fought in a war: a Vietnam veteran.
adjective
3. (of soldiers) having had service or experience in warfare: veteran troops.
4. experienced through long service or practice; having served for a long period: a veteran member of Congress.
5. of, pertaining to, or characteristic of veterans.

It's more fitting than this one:

thug [thuhg]
noun
1. a cruel or vicious ruffian, robber, or murderer.
2. (sometimes initial capital letter) one of a former group of professional robbers and murderers in India who strangled their victims.

Just to have it said, in the militairy/navy they themselves use the term veteran for those that have seen combat, not those that spend some time carrying a weapon ;)

Zaroth-
There should always be at least one session in the server browser list, either pointing people to 1.3.6.2 (if you're running 1.0 thru 1.3pb5.1), or pointing people to these forums (if running 1.3.6.*). If you don't see it, odds are there's one of two things going on:

1) The search for games is set to LAN Only. That'll search your LAN only. Press the button just above (and far right) of the session list, and make sure it says 'internet thru Gamespy'. That'll search the internet as a whole for games.

2) You have a firewall or router blocking packets. The 1.3 installer will offer to tell the Windows firewall if BZ2 should be allowed to communicate. If you chose to not allow that, or you have a different firewall application, you will need to reconfigure your firewall to allow BZ2. To make sure there's no window popping up from your firewall, run BZ2 in windowed mode BEFORE searching for games. Easiest way to do that is on the initial BZ2 pilot login (selection) screen, hit alt-enter. That's been the Windows default keyboard shortcut for switching fullscreen to windowed for over a decade. Once you're in windowed mode, then try looking for games.

Make sure you can at least see the advertising sessions. If you can't, then the problem is almost certainly on your end.

My time zone is "UTC-5:00 Eastern Time" and thanks for all the replies, I played Starcraft 1 A LOT 10 years ago. By the way, I feel old saying 10 years ago.... wow... right now I play Starcraft 2, haha funny that I always played Starcraft 1 every once and awhile for 10 years... back to my point, I thought Battlezone would of took the RTS market compared to Starcraft. Really hope they make a Battlezone 3.

If Activision see a profit potential it may happen, but more then likely it'll be PC based rather then for current game systems. Battlezone, would need to add some more features like ground troops, air and possibley water based craft. The Unreal engine has a lot of promise. The Genesis Project? Probalbly not.
