I know, just telling you how the mission played for me .. pretty much all the gazillion times I played it
Did forget that 'opening' scout for a second though. Probably cause I didnt care to build a base, but beyond seeing some warriors patrol the place I never got attacked as far as I can recall.
While the general ethos of not changing things just for the hell of it should be respected, I have felt for some time that the penalty for failing to successfully ambush the Scion Recycler in this mission, should indeed be having it build a full base and then destroy you. As is is it just does not matter if you succeed in the ambush or not.

i just ran through the mission again and ignored the convoy and it deployed and built a crig which built one spire and it builds scouts to attack pools, etc.. guessing at the mission designer's intent, it seems that the matriarch vehicle is either a replacement one or it packed up and moved to the new spot, so they have a full base, but it is just divided.
if/after the mat deploys, the objective changes to 'destroy the enemy recycler' and 'defend your recycler'.
one thing i notice is that some warriors go way north of the map and then try to come back, but get stuck, so they either get lost due to the AIP switch or their pathing goes wonky.

Wouldn't it be possible to move the convoy to another team allied with the enemy so they can actually build a full base instead of just having the non-existing structures built?
Yes, it would be possible, but that would be outside the scope of the mission script.
I'm working on fixing the warriors pathing/getting stuck out of bounds, so that they attack better.

That'd be a better job for a mod than a patch. There has been talk of a mod that aims to brush up the campaign once or twice, but these developers generally move on to more original things. Maybe it'll happen someday.

I honostly wouldnt make it more challenging ... I'd make you fail the mission, get the Matriarch deployed and show you what happens when an enemy gets a base behind your lines (sort of).
Now if that would make the mission more challenging ....
IMO the mission is too short and that sort of makes it a waste of the mission. Having a mission like that isnt all that bad, but ½ the ISDF missions are like this; short, simple and to the point ... seemingly forgetting it is a game and I want to enjoy it
They are designed for players with no experience, as they should be. I loved playing through them when the game was new and I had never played a game like that before, much of the challenge was just figuring out how to get to the end of each mission. None of us now have the incompetence required to judge their true difficulty. Changes should be minimal and true to the spirit of the original game.

i'm thinking i could add some code to check the value of a/some varbs set via the console which switches to a harder AIP set, sends bigger attacks, adds thicker armor to the enemy ships, etc.
that way, the newcomers would not be affected, but experienced players could enjoy more of a challenge by setting the varbs in the console.

let me know if you spot any problems along the way, please.

I did not meet any problems. I noticed just a few changes: 2 or 3 Warriors appeared to attack the base in the very beginning and one is patrolling the Shabayev's location.
yup, those were in the code, but the path points on the map didn't match, so i corrected that. same thing with the patrolling sentries and the builders building the spires.
also, the code and voiceovers had shabayev inside the ruin, but it placed her outside the ruin, so i placed her outside, then had her run into the ruin, then run outside to meet you when you get close.
it builds 2 warriors again after awhile after you destroy their base.
there was also some code that was supposed to spawn a sentry down the hill from the ruin and patrol that wasn't working, so i fixed that.
if you approach her on foot, it builds a sentry to come attack you and her.
if you take too long, it builds 2 sentries to the south that come and kill her and the ruin.
i've also added some maulers and two furies that attack your pools and base after awhile.
there's also a leftover geyser to the south.
