Looks better certainly, it does have a noticeable impact on the performance of my pc, which isn't so new any more, I'm wondering if I should not reduce the size of the the base layer textures to 512x512

The only time I had a noticeable impact, even on my old PC, was using the maximum possible size for terrain. The result of that was a hang on initial load of the textures into memory, but after, no issues.

Its not a big impact, runs ok, I just notice the difference when playing online. Not quite as fast as it was. Reducing the base layers, which are typically light on detail anyway, would make the low detail function more effective, possibly.

289mb of stock bz2 terrain textures (tga)at 1024x1024, reworked with fine detail.
Not included are Core, metal and fort, rend7-rend10 (may do these later)
Also included some prop textures, rocks and ice.
pscharion.tga at 512x512 with fixed alpha channel.
Intended for Large textures pack v2.
Have a look through them, most are fairly lightly altered, a few needed more radical changes to make them actually look more like what they are supposed to be.

The overall effect on map appears slightly less contrasty, this unavoidable, as in order to add detail, less pure black/white is used.

Obviously, upscale reworking this Image, is a silly thing to do, what with folks spending gazillions in putting up rockets and satellites to take much better pictures of it. There are a lot to choose from.
So Post links to your links to pictures of the Earth you would like to see in the bz2 HI res pack! Oh go on.

Should I pick one from the Apollo missions era, where it appears less damaged than it does now, or a newer (browner) one?

Red they already looked like a smoking hole, that's their whole problem. Making it smoke a bit more won't alter a thing. The whole concept that intervention will make any difference is flawed. If the US gov had spent that much $s on protecting their own environment they might have saved your own nation from a similar future.

You would never cut it as a Dalek Red, go for the full 100% or its not worth the effort. :)

It's the same picture as my first one.
Hmm the shadow is on the wrong side and its not quiet dark enough. Looks great in game on a full zoom at 1024x1024, the mipmap it shows in normal view is not so good though.
