Ill have to try turning vsync back on. Last time i tried, it resulted in a lot of mouse lag. Juggz pointed out. I need to bugzilla it when i get home.

I agree. Commando has been responsible for finding, reporting and helping to avert bugs that affect all players, for several years now, and the patch would be nowhere near its current level of stability if not for his efforts. If the beta testing team only had one position on it, i'd vote for Commando to be on it.

Commando, when I turn on vsync I have mouse lag too.. :( . I tryed turn on with triple buffer, and turn off, & tryed with all nvidia settings.

SC2 , doesn't create such heating of laptop. as bz2. its interesting situation.

Have you tried turning off BOTH vsync and triple buffer, then restarting BZ2?

I'm still getting a noticeable disparity firing an AT-stab between 1.6.3.4n and z28, even at 1280x1024. It's not really that the overall fps is struggling, but I'm getting just a few fractions of a second of near 15-25 fps making things seem very "lurchy", and that isn't happening for me on earlier versions. This lappy has always had particle slowdowns here and there, I just never noticed it struggling with high particles so clearly and consistently before, a la AT-Stab firing or being hit by Plasma/Combat Laser.

Oh well! Cursed particles...

SC2 , doesn't create such heating of laptop. as bz2. its interesting situation.
Per this, Starcraft 2 is limited to 30 fps by default. As I keep saying, the more fps, the more work everything does, and the more waste heat is generated. Start trying to compare things equally -- you could try setting sc2 to vsync off and a max of 150+fps, and see how that runs your system. Don't compare a framerate capped game (once again, slower fps means LESS HEAT) to an uncapped one.

That savegame is a good test of raw fill rate. If you load it up, and hit escape to bring up the options pages, that stops all game simulation (e.g. AI, physics, pathfinding, etc). You can play with most of the options on graphics page #1 to see what effect they have on framerate, just give it a few seconds after changing an option for it to take effect, as the framerate display averages the last few entries. If particles high, medium or low has a significant effect on your framerate while that savegame is paused, then you are almost certainly limited by your GPU as long as lots of fullscreen particles are rendered. If there's not much change in framerate when you adjust particles, then your GPU is probably not the limiting factor. You can also try and drop any multisampling options (graphics options, page 2) to none/off, as that also hits your GPU's fill rate pretty hard.

Not seeing any such slowdown here. Here's another savegame. Same rough setup as above, but I used the editor to place a sabre with AT-stab, and moved away from the pool. Load, and hold down the left mouse button to keep firing. Not as good a graphics profile, because the simulation has to be running; you could try a test of hitting the left mouse button and escape as soon as possible afterwards to pause it so you can see if graphics options make any changes with the same set of things onscreen. Loading that in the profiler here and holding down the left mouse button was still 800+ fps. Here's the profile dump:

Note: this isn't quite the same build as the earlier profile; I optimized up dlfree/dlmalloc, making it more efficient. Also the camera position changed, so it'll do different work in culling the terrain quadtree. But, the first (only) particle function that shows up is TwirlTrailRenderClass::Render at 1.14% of samples. Not much at all, and the bulk of TwirlTrailRenderClass::Render comes from rotating the particles. For TwirlTrailRenderClass, particles low clamps size and never rotates them; particles medium clamps size and rotates them; particles high has no clamp and rotates them.

You can try walking builds forward from 1.3.6.4n with that savegame to try and see where anything changed.

This crash happened in an MPI game with vsr (map MPISurprise). I joined another guy, who was hosting and already playing for a while. After I joined everything went smoothly for about mins when I suddenly crashed (log below).

Looks like I was completely and utterly wrong about which version was the last one I didn't have the At-stab stutter on. It wasn't 1.3.6.4n, it was 1.3.6.2. Not really the same thing... I didn't have my installations/shortcuts straight.
In any case, 1.3.6.2 is the last version I can find where I don't have this problem.

It's ok though, I'll deal with low particles. I can do with one more excuse to get a new machine, anyway. ;)
