Virtual Computers for testing a "sync error" issue

Hey guys, I'm running into a pretty consistent "sync error" crash that I'm trying to isolate, but it seems to only happen when two or more clients connect to my server from outside my router. (Possibly when both clients are also behind the same router on their end) Obviously once the game crashes a few times, the guys playing want to move on to something else, so I need a way to test it myself.

Do any of you know of any (free or cheap-ish) software or services that would run Battlezone? Even if it's crappy and low framerate, and even (especially?) if it's online. I tried Azure but I would have to subscribe to the MSDN to get access to install windows 7 or 8. VirtualBox and Virtual PC give me an instant CTD.

I have logs and chat logs of the error, but it's also from modded games. So I want to try a few vanilla games and get the logs from that before officially saying it's a bug.

I believe I was able to get VMWARE workstation to run bz2, but that tends to be around $200 plus the cost of the OS.

I guess you could install Windows and never specify a product key, during the install. This will give you 30 days to toy with bz2 before the grace period ends, requiring a reformat/reinstall.

Amazon offers EC2 instances with Windows/Linux and GPUs. The first year is for free but you need a cc (virtual is fine).
Probably easier to just ask someone and test with them.

Cheapest way: you can run multiple instances of BZ2 on a computer simultaneously. Running in windowed mode makes this fairly easy to manage.

It looks like I've lost them. Is there a way to tell battlezone not to delete logs? At the moment it's only keeping the last five.

From the pattern I was seeing I definitely think it has something to do with the two players that were behind the same router. For a few minutes before the crashes I saw a bunch of sync errors for both of them. In 1.3.6.5 there were a lot more, and eventually the watchdog killed the app thinking it was in a loop (at least that's what I remember reading from the log.) In 1.3.7.0a130v it didn't say anything about the watchdog, but I still see a bunch of sync errors before the crash.

At the moment I'm using the UEP pack, coxxons high res tecture pack and a recycler pack that I made that has a bunch of various toys. It doesn't seem to be the mods that are causing the problem though. After the crash I tried to run a vanilla MPI map with the standard recy and got an instant crash on the first gamestate check.

VMware seems to run BZ very well though! and yeah i can install my Win7 disk without a key and run it for 30 days. I've been spending the day trying to recreate the error but no luck, even with the same mods that we crashed with. The only thing I can guess is that the latency is low enough between my VPCs that it's not creating an issue.

I'm gonna try tethering my two guests through my phone though and see if I can get anywhere

I was playing around with doing this but I still couldn't get it to crash. I was also worried that when BZ goes into alt-tab mode that it might behave differently and wanted to set up the conditions as close as possible to the original scenario. I was hoping setting up two of the guests on VMs and behind the same IP would uncover something, but no luck. I may have to just beg the two guys that were playing with me to spend some time playing doomed games and grab all the logs from it :P

You could always use Volume Shadow Copies to restore to a previous version of the log folder.

This is a Windows feature that has been around since Vista.

Well I haven't gotten anywhere with my own testing yet but I did convince a few guys to play a modded and a vanilla game and send me the logs from all the clients before moving on to something else. My dumb ass forgot to make sure mplogging was turned on though, so I don't have the chat logs.

I'm no longer convinced that it has to do with two clients being behind the same router though. I had them split up under separate public IPs for these games

We found another problem during the vanilla game but I need to go investigate it more. It was a 5 player FFA and I was Scion. Every time I entered my Kiln or Forge terminal it spammed the chatlogs of all the other clients with some error. You can see a bunch of warnings in the logs related to it.
