Runtime Error

Hi,

i got back to play Battlezone2, and back then i already had the 1.3 technical alpha 5 thing on, so i looked up if there was something new, and came across the 1.3 Public Beta 6.


When i play the single player campaign, after the loading screen, where the speaker tells more about the backstory or whats going on, Battlezone2 crashes with an c++ runtime error - Program requested abnormal runtime termination.

When i start Battlezone2 again i can play the mission, can watch the debriefing, the new briefing.. get the new loading screen and the same happens again. Basically having to restart Battlezone2 over and over again after each single mission to be able to load it up, otherwise i get this runtime error.

The runtime error basically happens the very moment the game wants to switch from the loading screen, into the actual game.

Is it a setting problem? Do i have any bad settings? Any idea what it could be?


Any advice or help is really appreciated

Saying 'runtime error' is too vague to be useful. Here's some things that will help us help you.

1) What OS (XP, Vista, 7? If Vista/Win7, is it 32 or 64 bit)?
2) Did you install the Visual C++ installers when prompted during the pb6 installer? If you're not sure, or didn't, you can look in the 'redist' folder where you installed pb6 into. Use Windows Explorer to open the redist folder, and run all the exes under there.
3) Try a round of Windows update after that. On XP, use Internet Exploder to go to http://update.microsoft.com . On Win7, go to Control Panel -> Windows Update (might be under the security area if you have the default "helpful" (NOT!) hierarchival view)
4) Rebooted after all of the above?
5) Try posting the battlezone.log file after it crashes out. On XP, that battlezone.log file is in the same directory as bzone.exe (i.e., where you installed pb6 into). On Vista/Win7, it's in ${MyDocuments}\My Games\Battlezone II

1) I am still running XP
2) Yes i did, cancelled the 2008 one first as it only offered repair/uninstall, after the crashing i reinstalled the patch and let all run/repair.

3) Didn't do that yet, on the other hand it is set to update automatically and installed an update just yesterday evening

4) I did reboot yes, after the second round of reinstalling the patch


It is an Athlon 64 X2 5000+ processor, running on a NVidia Gforce 9400GT in 1680x1050 widescreen.

For that, press space while loading to skip thru the voiceover. While that voiceover is still playing, another piece of code thinks that the game's locked up. It throws an uhoh on that.

Darn! The anti-freeze thread strikes again! So now loading VOs do it too?

Yea just skip the voice over so it isn't waiting too long and it should play alright. Post back if anything else happens.

Thanks.. that indeed helps and fixes it.. when i press space as soon as the loading bars indicate the loading is done, it starts without problems.

Just makes me miss out on the voice overs... has been quite some time since i played it. Well at least it is playable now :)

I am assuming the modern machines are too fast, so it runs into this problem? Is this the only way to fix or avoid that?

Nope. The anti-deadlock thread was a new thing to fix issues with freezing. The thread is always running checking to see if the game freezes and thus if it does ready to close it and report anything that might help track down the cause of the freeze. The issue being that some operations, such as playing the mission load voice over, appear to lock the main thread until the sound is complete, tricking the anti-deadlock thread to think the game is frozen.

That is likely the only way to avoid it until it is fixed. Admittedly, the Campaign has not been a major focus of 1.3 as of late and repairing any issues with it, aside from engine issues like this deadlock one, falls to the modders and testers. I am in a position to fix anomalies with the missions themselves if not for time. Because of this, the campaign has not received much attention which is probably how this issue was missed in the testing.

Ah thanks for explaining. I like to play the campaigns of old games again. Brings either back memories.. or feels like playing a new game.. depending on how long ago it was ;)

Have yet to get my friends into playing Battlezone2 again.. to do anything with the multiplayer mode.

It is nice to see that a game this old still gets supported and even "upgraded" to new engines or DX versions... always liked Battlezone, its playstyle of "being in the middle of it" is still quite unique.

Just so you guys know, Hexagon has the SAME error as mine.
It just happens randomly.
Also I have a 32-bit WinXP computer with 2008 C++/redist installed.

I have a suspicion you did not do any of the things Hexagon did, that being give system specs and then a log allowing us to pinpoint the issue quickly and easily and come up with a workaround and/or look into a fix for later versions. However, I don't feel like searching for a topic to confirm this suspicion.

I am surprised that the runtime error turned out to be related to an AV, but the fact it was meant the logs were very useful. The runtime error must close BZ2 before it can report the AV via normal means. I wonder if, since the main thread that was believed to be deadlocked would handle the AV window, the anti-deadlock code just uses an assert instead to crash the program. Really I can't say for sure on anything, I can only offer very educated guesses.
