What happened to Dark Reign 2?

Re: What happened to Dark Reign 2?
Wrong on the Zero engine. Zero was the post-BZ2 engine Pandemic made. Zero was used on Star Wars: Clone Wars (Gamecube, PS2, XBox). Zero was also used as the editor for Star Wars: Battlefront 1 & 2. But, the Battlefront games used a different engine for actual gameplay.
Zero was designed to be a PC-specific engine, and was hardly ideal for consoles. That's why we had to replace it after only one game.

Wikipedia is even wronger, then.

And you can't fix it since the wikinazies come in and preserve the misinformation.AHadley wrote:Wikipedia is even wronger, then.
Re: What happened to Dark Reign 2?
Apparently, they'll allow developer quotes as a source now. Two admins fought for a while between WP:OR and WP:SYNTH, but they decided developer quotes are valid.
Re: What happened to Dark Reign 2?
Who ever said the Wiki Nazi with domain over the BZ pages follows the rules? He even ignored another staffer that came in and told him to cool it.
Re: What happened to Dark Reign 2?
Fair point.
Re: What happened to Dark Reign 2?
I don't have VS98 installed atm but i tried to compile this in VS97, VS2005, VS2008 and it seems to have a lot of errors to fix.
Has anyone made a VS2008 version that compiles?

I would like to have it in 2010 but one has to first make the jump from to 2008. There are a ton of issues with such a conversion from scoping on for loops to stricter casting requirements.

Set loop conformance to no.Nielk1 wrote:I would like to have it in 2010 but one has to first make the jump from to 2008. There are a ton of issues with such a conversion from scoping on for loops to stricter casting requirements.
I have VS98 sp6 but i'll bet it will still have errors, and i don't like vs98, the compiler had a bug with Bz that was never fixed.
I never played DR2, maybe i'll install the demo and see if it's worth the work.
Re: What happened to Dark Reign 2?
I would have to resist the urge to FIX the loops rather than just enable a flag which restores the incorrect compiler behavior.

Re: What happened to Dark Reign 2?
Who dares question the excellence of DR2!? Oh well, hope you do. After successfully converting it, we just need a fix for modern networks and for someone generous enough who has ample server space to set up a few dedicated servers for us. As far as compilers go, I think DR2 would work best as a last-ditch effort in plain-old DevCPP. I'll see if I can contact Mr. Borrud and maybe even Mr. Miller for more details on the technicals of the source.Apollo wrote:I never played DR2, maybe i'll install the demo and see if it's worth the work.
I'm only going to give contacting them a shot, so there are no guarantees or promises on whether or not they give a s&%$.
Re: What happened to Dark Reign 2?
Um, I am pretty sure there are no dedicated servers in DR2.
Re: What happened to Dark Reign 2?
I take it DR2 never used gamespy?

Re: What happened to Dark Reign 2?
There used to be, until the official servers were shut down in November 2008. Afterwards, what remained of the community resorted to VPNs and other means of online multiplayer. If we could fix the code somehow, we just may be able to revive the underground DR2 hype, the same way GSH kept BZ2 alive after an early death. Is there an active DR2 community?
And by the way Nielk1, enlighten me: What exactly is a dedicated server?
Re: What happened to Dark Reign 2?
Soo Pandemic kept the server alive till EA killed Pandemic i guess.
Which VS98 service pack does it compile with without errors?
