BZ2 1.3.6.4z19 - Open beta & testing
Download this and unpack over your existing 1.3.6.4 install's exe. This is a quick patch that re-enables construction rig upgrades and other tweaks
If you can, please install and test this. I think that this build is about 99.9% of what I want to put into a 1.3.6.5 release. Your best chance of having bugs fixed for 1.3.6.5 is to report things on the 1.3.6.4 series. Logfiles -- battlezone.log and chatlog (if enabled) -- are useful. Otherwise, reporting things in a way that makes them happen here is best.
See the changelog for the fuller descriptions of what's changed. Since 1.3.6.4n:
- Construction rigs can upgrade once again
- Much work to make griefers less able to annoy people
- Anyone can now ban anyone at any time - if you're a client in a game, you can ban a host or another client. Anyone you've banned who's hosting a game won't show up on the list of servers. Anyone you've previously banned who is a client in a game you joined is now warned about
- CUT the 1.2-style physics craft variants. The 1.3 patch series does not encourage that monoculture of overpowered scouts. Learn to explore the tech tree.
- Tweaked session registration and browsing to hopefully work around antivirus with overactive web shields better
- Chroming of objects is now SSE-powered for greater performance
- Tracked vehicle physics ought to be more solid. BZ2's collision code is still garbage, though
- On players leaving in a teamplay game, their units are redistributed to remaining players to avoid orphanage
- Upscaled shell fonts to look less klunky at large resolutions - note that this will require mods with custom extra options pages to also be upscaled
- Ingame UI can be upscaled by a preference - see graphics options, page 2, bottom right
- Input smoothing option from Ken, also pathing system tweaks and particle render from him.
- MP escape screen chat should scroll better
- Fix for input getting stuck at edges of range
- Crash logs aren't overwritten next boot, up to 10 crash logfiles and 5 regular logfiles are kept
- Smoother timeskew code, and servers will now time out delayed moves for clients to keep the game smoother.
- More work run in background thread while waiting for vsync for smoother
- More retransmits of player packets for more lossy connections
- A few graphical glitches fixed

I had 5 games in a row, 1 mpi, 1 dm and 3 local games and worked fine.

So far, having an improved experience on z19, the netcode seems to have a fair balance and less prone to problems (e.g. facing random directions during worldswap), local warp for me as a lossy client is still high during packet loss, but as long as it doesnt devolve into an unplayable mess with random ship facings, teleportings and control cutoffs then i'm happy. In game stability seems to have improved with ping spikes being less affective towards the server than <z13 or even z15. Someone with a higher-than-average ping but reasonably good stability should find the experience to be rather playable.
2 games with a small amount of players (4 total) is hardly a good basis for a thorough evaluation, but so far my only major complaint here is that the default ping limit hasnt changed from z15

Bug:
In bunker-view mode, I click on factory (symbol), then on "drop off" and set it somewhere. Then I click the recicler symbol to set the drop off and I cannot select it! It auto de-selects!

Voiceovers still do not seem to work (e.g. Telling my scavs to follow me, I do not hear confirmation, and telling teammates 'i got your six' 'follow me' are not audible).
*EDIT* - The player rehosted, voiceovers came back. odd, working now after rehost.
750 max ping limit is still causing problems. Was in an MPI .. all players got kicked after about 10 minutes due to a server spike (no one was higher than 150 ping). Please set to 1500 at least, the one player I know of who exploited the 'lag button' is no longer doing so. Ping spikes are common seeing players are connecting from all over the world, causing frequent drops and rejoins causing resyncs and lag.
F7 is usually a problem still in a 5 v 5 strat (e.g. cannot select F7 to pass units to).
Players are often hidden in shell, preventing game launch. They have to join another team to 'unhide'. This happens when there is more than 4 players to a team.
I'll let you know more as I continue test.

I don't think the 5v5 bugs will be fixed because it would require a lot of changes to BZ2 that would be difficult for GSH to implement.
I would honestly prefer buggy 5v5 to not having it as an option. 5v5 is a nice game mode even despite the bugs.

Just had the command bug myself, I was telling a constructor to build, when a big amount of lag happened. The building wasn't build and
after that the build menu was greyed out for that constructor. I was the only person on that team, switching command roles didn't help, but
building a new constructor worked. The factory wasn't affected.

The game froze and went back to its previous state (build command was lost). After that the game hosts ship started lagging to me for more then 10 mins. But I checked my WLAN connection during that time and it had occasional ping spikes.Nielk1 wrote:Huge lag? A few of us did some experimenting in z19 and made some observations about bugs we noticed:
1) In ST games, laser and blast will often be invisible, seems to happen more frequently with non-hosts. We were able to reproduce this one very often in ST, but not in DM. Couldnt nail down any specific causes, just that sometimes when shot these weapons will be visible, and sometimes they will not be visible.
2) Constructor 'no build' bug is still believed to be caused by lag spikes
3) Kebbz noted that he seen another player be unaffected by EMP stream in an ST game (no weapons lockdown at all). We tested this but were unable to reproduce it.
4) Kebbz got a hard-lock soon upon deploying a recycler in one game
UPDATE: Another player sent me his logfile with the same error. The only similarities I noticed was the video cards were both low-end nvidia ones. In one game, affected player was host, in the other, affected player was the client. Still too early to come to any conclusion about that.

I noticed a bug, where sometimes a tank would not be rendered from a distance. You could still see there red sniper hit point, but nothing else. Happened on dunes in IA, there where 3 tanks waiting of which one was not rendered.

Sorry, I'm going to disagree here. First off, this is a client-side setting that can be changed, but it really shouldn't. BZ2 networking and gameplay is going to just plain suffer at a 1500 ping -- which is 1.5 seconds. Round trip. Nobody can effectively dogfight in such conditions. Period. Asking BZ2 to try and guess at moves under such circumstances is going to leave nobody happy. I've worked on a flight trainer for the USAF where we added real-world lag in -- 1.5-2.5 seconds. But, that's a slow-moving surveillance platform, not a twitch dogfighter.750 max ping limit is still causing problems. Was in an MPI .. all players got kicked after about 10 minutes due to a server spike (no one was higher than 150 ping). Please set to 1500 at least, the one player I know of who exploited the 'lag button' is no longer doing so. Ping spikes are common seeing players are connecting from all over the world, causing frequent drops and rejoins causing resyncs and lag
I've done a lot of work to make BZ2 handle things, and yet I still get people randomly complaining about LAAAAG!!1!111!ELEVENTY!!!! -- if the cause is that they're playing with piss-poor networking, then that's their fault. Not BZ2's. Go play Quake 3, Counter-strike -- max ping is 350 per that forum post, or other games with such high pings. And tell me about the successes you experience. Or not.
Seriously, I shouldn't have to mention this, but I will: before playing BZ2, you really should check that spouse/kids/parents/roomate(s)/neighbors leeching bandwidth put a pause to steam downloading/netfix/torrenting/skype/any other huge bandwidth sinks. Or get a router (or upgrade your router) to turn on a QoS -- check the manual for your specific router. Because by default, BZ2 traffic is not prioritized by routers. It's in your hands to make it so. Whatever opinions you may have on net neutrality on the net as a whole, within your home network, you do not want neutrality. Because routers, by default, treat all packets equally (i.e. neutrality) and when things get congested, they start dropping/squelching things randomly. BZ2 (and other games) need a more favored position to get a better experience. You can't prioritize game packets outside of your home (with or without net neutrality), but what you can control, you should optimize it for your games.

Yes if your using a router, you should have QOS settings. Battlezone2 needs to be added with a high priority, or it will just be set as normal.
Also if there are other pc's connected to that router, the ideal state is for them to be turned off. Just having another pc on the network (even unused) does significantly effect the quality of the connection.
Some ISP's like to do inconsiderate things like insisting that you use a Modem they supplied. You DO NOT Have to do this. It is only to make life easier for their own tech support dept.

I once been told, a long time ago, but it concerns the same modem/ISP, that there is some build-in code in the modem that 'allows' the connection. Before that the way to connect was to set your pc-name to a specific user-name. They thankfully dont have that requirement any more.
