You can still make mods in the style used in 1.2, aside from the whole flying thing. There are just, better ways now.
At some point in the future I see us finally getting some way to distribute the game legally, either at penny cost digitally or as sanctioned abandon-ware. There would then be a small surge of players before it puttered out to only exist in scheduled games again as it would have for the year or two before.
Unless something revolutionary happens.
